The Veteran He took up rifle, musket balls Took the pledge, answered call For his land, right or wrong Stemmed the tide, the day was long God and Country, black and white Fought from sunrise into blood’s night Heard the screams, fell to rise Wearied soldier of battled cries ~*~ World War I, then II, and more Traveled far to Korean shore Every man who lost his life Left his family, left his wife Every curse for whom we are Why? He had to travel far, Into countries to help oppressed To fight a war against protest ~*~ A world caught up in time and tide Nation’s leaders took a side Vietnam, oh, what a ride Time to hear a Veteran’s side Anger still shakes him deep Nightmares still proclaim his sleep He traveled so far to keep Promises; his country weeps For those who are lost and gone His country, who went beyond Will of men who went along For a cause they thought was strong He led teams who went to war Tell him please, what he fought for It's not too late to say "Thank You" for God, Country, our red, white, and blue. My thanks to all of the Veterans who served their Country Now, and then. [This message has been edited by Sunshine (11-09-2002 08:35 PM).] |

As we get ready to mark another Remembrance Day in my country...this poem was very timely...each year the number of veterans gets smaller...will we remember when they are all gone? ...believe what your heart feels... |

Thank you. None of the days that take a moment to give respect to our military should be taken lightly. |

This is most definitely a treasure to be kept and read each year at this time---lest we forget what was given---and lost... ~ loving hugs to a loving heart and to all those who gave of their service---and of their lives Linda |

Karilea, A lovely tribute to veterans of courage, honor and sacrifice. To all of them and the families who gave we owe so much. God bless our veterans and their families and God bless the USA. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

This is certainly a great piece of work. And the subject matter is also quite fitting. Having both a father and grandfather who are veterans helped me appreciate this even more. Being in the service helps that too... |

Karilea, must be the emotion of your poem and the looming possibility of a war with Iraq that brought tears to this gal's heart. You do our vets proud with your words. God bless the USA and you, dear poetess. Huggles, Marti |
