For The Memories, My Thanks

The question asked “What are you thankful for?”
I pondered this thought over and over in my mind.
Tell me what you really are thankful for.
It would be so easy to say the usual,
but to reach deep and pull something out
of my very soul would not be an easy task.

I went on about my daily business
this question hanging heavy in my mind
but to no avail, the answers would not come.
One day in my wanderings I ran into
a relative, one that I had not seen in years.

This older woman seemed almost surprised
when I asked her how she was and
what had been going on in her life
since the last time that we had met.

My heart, in that moment was filled
with sadness as I realized
that this woman I had adored
all of my life could not,
because of her age remember….

you know, that disease,
the one that steals the mind
and leaves behind
the empty shell of what
once was.

The realization dawned upon me
like the birth of a new sunrise
and I smiled knowing I had searched
deep enough to find the answer.

If you ask me “What are you thankful for?”
I can only tell you that I am thankful
for the memories.

Donna

It is so easy to forget to remember....and so sad when disease takes such treasures...thank you for reminding me to be grateful for the memories.

Yes, memories...sometimes we forget just how important they are.  You spoke well, my friend.  This is beautiful, as is your gentle spirit, Donna.     Hugs

Karilea's challenge reminded me of that incident which only occured a few weeks ago.
I wasn't sure how to express it,
this was the end result.

Thank you all, for sharing the memory.....
