"I imploy no body. I am falsely accused." Boston gaol, Sarah died. Bridget hanged. Sarah hanged. Elizabeth hanged. Susannah hanged. Sarah hanged. Rebecca hanged. Gallows Hill. George hanged. Martha hanged. George hanged. John hanged. John hanged. Two days pressed, Giles died. Martha hanged. Mary hanged. Alice hanged. Mary hanged. Pretty trees. Ann hanged. Wilmott hanged. Margaret hanged. Samuel hanged. In their cells, Roger died, Lyndia died, Ann died. "I know nothing of it." |

I would be in debt to the author if he explained this piece to me ...sometimes my ability to understand works is not as sophisticated as it should be. ... and they sent him home happy ... one hundred percent. |

That was quite a list of hangings. I didn't know so many were hanged. Thanks for the history lesson. |

Many were hanged - One even crushed to death between two stones, as he refused to confess to being a witch. This was a sad time in history - and similar hysteria continues to arise in our contemporary world in one venue or another... Well said, Mike... |

Thanks all. I saw an article on the trials recently. It's something I haven't thought about for years, but still elicits a response of anger and sadness from me. Because yes, things like this still go on, on much larger and smaller scales, all over the world. Thanks for readin'... |

Mikey, a powerful view at how paranoia often leads to the death of innocents. The ladders of life that we scale merrily Move mysteriously around So that when you think you're climbing up, man In fact you're climbing down-Nick ca |

I watched a special last night, about the Salem witch trials and the connection with ergot, a grain fungus that causes hallucinations. (think LSD) All those people, probably hallucinating and 'bewitched' from eating contaminated rye flour. Because no one could identify the real roots of the 'madness' it was labeled as being caused by witchcraft. Similar incidents happened in Europe, and as recently as the early 50's in France. The recent research is amazing. Striking similarities exist in cases around the world, where people ate breads made from rye and barley that had grown under similar conditions. Oddly enough, a modern use for the alkaloid ergotamine is in the treatment of migraines, though under close medical supervision, as it has toxic, hallucinatory qualities. Unfortunately, this information is too late for all those poor souls who were hanged or sometimes burnt at the stake. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (11-01-2002 11:16 PM).] |

What a terrible, shameful time in our nation's history, Mr.Squirrel... I'm sure glad that they don't hang witches anymore today... otherwise, you would not be seeing me here!!! Thanks for sharing the poem and the history lesson with us. ~ hugs from the chipwitch Lyra |

For some reason, I've always been fascinated in this subject. I, too, think many innocent people were killed during this time. Thanks for sharing this with us. Love To All, Ethel |

Glad you all enjoyed, and Lyra, sorry I've been so busy of late. It's tough. |
