Konrad’s Concrete Konrad spent several years shaking sand from his jean cuffs at every pit stop and drive-in, every backwater truck stop and sidewalk cafe, but the sand never seemed to leave his seams, never once was he let loose of those grains of memory which ground into his heels from childhood, until he landed in Chi-town. On that route from rural posturing, he walked in statuesque shadow at noon, under glint and gleam of architecturally structured monoliths that did not beat the tempo of the streets of where he’d been, or where he might go… still, the blues rang through smog, on the water’s front, where hats tipped up for tips thrown down, a sax sacking airwaves for the melancholy, the remaining sand of his beginnings seeming to end there, on the boardwalk, settling into Lake Michigan… he thought he would find his dream, there, on the sidewalks of the new and improved, where the cobblestones had been bricked over, then the asphalt belabored the concrete rolls, and all was less than it was when it was just sand and grass, marsh and reed… and it begged Konrad’s question, if a man, if he is raised on concrete slabs, hard and unmoving, unbending, and stalwart, what does he then know of sand… the undulating push and shift of time, each grain individually allowing one to feel great, for a moment, until they pile against one, and become more than one… at least, for an instant, a few grains of sand, between one’s fingers, allow us to feel the edge, but when mixed with rock, mortar, and wet tears, the monoliths are born, and a man can be buried, never knowing the feel of sand beneath his heel… Konrad left Chi-town soon after, the concrete being too inflexible for his spirit, but knowing that bit of roving skimmed just enough residue into his soul that a song might one day be born… and he would somehow blues them into a poem… ©Karilea Rilling Jungel 3 October 2002 |

"but knowing that bit of roving skimmed just enough residue into his soul that a song might one day be born… and he would somehow blues them into a poem…" Wow!!! Oh my gosh, this series just keeps getting better and better, sweet friend, I can't wait to see this very song that escapes his soul from his nomadic heart! (big hugggssssss) This is marvelous, sweet friend, I know Michael will just cherish this, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Beautiful, knowing work Karilea. It's obvious that the concrete/sand was the very least of the imaginings flowing from your pen. Astounded. |

Karilea You made him very real with this...and I saw him and understood him in my mind without even realizing I was reading words. Now that's good writing! |

one grain of sand...in most cases...would be more ancient than all the concrete in the world...and only a person in touch with the natural history of this planet would know and appreciate that fact...you stretched my consciousness with this write... ...believe what your heart feels..... |
