The Smell of Wet Cement The fog is laying down on the mountain. It weaves a gauze dressing over the naked burn of trees, a breath of frore from some patient star to hide the clearing where the prints of deer still run. My bare foot is guided to the morning spirit that fills me like new rain, and moisture laden, the clumped air culls memory of a hose in the dry backyard of a city with hard streets. Just to breathe this change of time is enough to measure how the leaf will turn and fall in color like flame licking summer grass into piles of cracked sound, and somewhere out an open door, as persistent as the sunrise, will be the smell of wet cement. You made me look My dictionary didn't have "frore" so I had to go to dictionary.com. There you go again, increasing my vocab. This was such an excellent, vivid piece. Love the "and fall in color like flame licking summer grass into piles of cracked sound," audio/video pic here, FANTABULOUS! Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |

Martie..Martie..Martie!! Chris Life is not measured by breaths you take, but by moments that take your breath away. |

Martie~You brought a tear to my eye with this one...Paul I know you can't wait for the rainy season to begin out there, to bring some relief from the fires in your lovely state. I bet when it rains you just throw off your shoes and walk in the rain and smell the steam rising from wet concrete. |

Martie, I know you're in Cali - I'm not sure exactly where, but I was sad to read in another one of your recent poems that fire has claimed the earth around you. I'm also thankful that it sounds as though it didn't take your home away, though. I love the sense of hope in this poem. After - what has it been - six months since the last rain, it will sure be a welcomed sight, followed by Californians sliding into each other on the oil-slicked freeways, right? Peace to you - Corinne |

Martie, I enjoyed this so much and your words always paint a brilliant picture for me. I do hope the fires have been held back; I have not seen any TV news reports of it lately. Frore, I had to look it up and I thank you for adding a new word to my vocabulary. Hugs, Marti Every now and then take a good look at something not made |
