Little one’s got a treasure from the dentist
in a tiny little tooth chest. Its barely morn and
he is already waiting
for night to come.

Tooth fairies now a days bring ‘golden’ coins.
Don’t laugh, its true, I was told this by a
five year old tooth fairy expert.  I surmised
the upgrade to be inflation, and
handily it jotted down
for future use.

***

Down, I was told, Lobo’s down.
And he was, my eyes wished, oh
how they wished it was a lie.
Scant four hours later
he was gone.

If it weren’t for his stricken still
form I would not believe there is
an evil with such a hatred for puppies that
subterfuge brings it into even
well protected places.

Burial came before the sun,
but not goodbye, not yet.
It wasn’t fair. I wouldn’t say it.

***

If it hadn’t been for the tooth
fairy, who “didn’t even make a peep”,
with her visit in the night
and the surprise
lighting my little ones’ face when from under
the pillow came his hand, filled
with the foretold gold, I wouldn’t
have had the fortitude
to meet the day

and say goodbye to Lobo.

Life is so bittersweet. I liked the comparison and contrast you employ here, very much illustrating that rollercoaster ride of sometimes a single day in the life.

Sweet and sad, all so true, jb...

buried one of mine not long ago...twighlight and hot...

painful experience, softened perhaps or in some ways worsened by the little ones.

I could have written this...perhaps I did, and just the names were changed...

a heart-breaking piece, and a heart-breaking peace...

saying goodbye to your child's childhood...and to Lobo...in the simple wave of a day that will remain in your memory and surface at the most unexpected times...

This touched me deeply. Many years ago the tooth fairy visited my daughters room, and this brings it all back as well as having a dear four legged companion put down. Well written piece of work. Chris

I'd been expecting and anticipating the tooth fairy's exploits to show up in poetic form... but I didn't count on the juxtaposition of sorrow. Your words paint such vivid life pictures... Life is full of both heartbreak and heartjoy... and as you've shown so well, they often hit almost simultaneously. Excellent work, lady... and hugs to you all. *S*

There's no way to keep them out of your heart, jellybeans, just as there's no way not to keep looking for them weeks after they've gone. How does one get over losing an unconditional lover?

You brought tears to my eyes with this one.....and I mean that.
