state of confusion

Leaves

In his personal effects,
a single, yellowed sheet of paper;
amazing it survived the years,
from his homelessness
in the 1970’s,
to the rundown motel of the 80’s,
and finally,
the Veterans’ Home;
until the day
we signed the declaration
to release my estranged father
from pain.

Hand-written, signed
by my grandmother,
Cora Kane,
it’s the only known chronicle
of Dad’s ancestry.
It bears names never
before spoken in relation to
our lineage:
Lobingier, Freed,
Hockenberry.

I lay two clan records side by side,
Mom’s - exhaustingly thorough one,
finding Eighteenth Century
roots in Ireland and Wales –
splashed by our arrival in style
in New York city;

and Cora’s  - a scant story
beginning in Kansas,
with gaps
of time and people:
teachers, farmers;
and a long trail
of diabetes.

It ends with my name
and birth date –

(big hugggssssss) Oh Corinne, this is so wonderfully heartfelt, sweet friend, this brought a tear to my eye because I find it amazing how our fathers can pass on so much to us all and to have this artifact can tell you so much of how your loving heart got here from Ireland and Kansas and everywhere! (sigh) God Bless You and your whole family, sweet friend, this is wonderful, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Corinne, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

What an amazing story in this write...of courage and victory in the scant of a lost yesterday.  A prized write. ThisDiamond

How eloquently you have expressed your ancestral history. This beautiful piece of writing will give continuity to the lives and events of your family and should be added to what records you already have.
