I am not one to support Beauty Queen contests. But there is one contestant I will support. Miss France, Sylvie Teller, I hereby crown you Miss World, and Sister of the Year. For you have vowed to pull out of the Miss World Beauty Pageant to protest the abusive law of Islam now operating in Nigeria. the law of Shariah, an archaic law that requires stoning a woman who has sex outside of marriage. Amina will be stoned in 2004 after weaning her new baby, unless world opinion or God intervenes. So, I offer you the sisterly crown, Sylvie, for you are already a winner in my eyes. FYI, the news link is here: http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/africa/09/07/nigeria.france/index.html |

Yes, Ive only just recently learned of this. And you know the punishment for a man in similar circumstance? Yep! Shall we discuss Clitorectomy? Ah Jeez, I do try to understand the others' viewpoint, but......... ~wranx In reply to "which way do we go?", the answer was never "straight", but, "progressively forward". |

I am so impressed with Sylvie for standing up for such a terrible injustice. And thank you for writing about it and bringing it to our little community. Change is made when people come together and demand justice. Hugs, Marti Every now and then take a good look at something not made |

I too, was overcome with emotion when I heard of her plight and that of her poor, innocent baby. Passionately expressed! Linda |

I hadn’t heard about Sylvie Teller’s decision, but I do admire it. I had read about the poor woman who was sentenced to be stoned to death and it outraged and sickened me that such a thing could happen. Like Wranx, I try to understand the point of view of other people and cultures, but there is nothing here to understand. It is just savage and barbaric. I pray that this woman will be spared such undeserved punishment. You can never win or lose |

To each one of you, heart hugs and a huge thank you. Next time I will try to make it a more 'poetic' post, but I literally blurted this one out this morning on my way out the door to go to work, ran back in and posted it and still caught my bus on time. Somehow I knew you would accept it in all it's roughness, considering the roughness of the subject matter.... |

(big hugggssssss) Oh Kacy, this is terrible what's going on and I too applaud this wonderful and courageous act this wonderful woman has done, we need more rebels like her! (wipes tears) God Bless Sylvie and all that follow her, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Well done Kacy. This whole ordeal has just sickened me. Chris Life is not measured by breaths you take, but by moments that take your breath away. |

dear Midnitesun, unfortunately stories like this are not unique and violence against women, whether permitted, condoned or perpetrated by the state, abound in many countries. Thank you for helping to raise awareness. Annika:- "Oh, do not ask, 'What is it?' |
