My love gave me a summer rose, I held it close and breathed its scent, A smell of warm and lazy days. So filled with joy and song, I wept, And teardrops fell upon its deep Red velvet petals, jade green leaves. The autumn came with browning leaves. The with’ring petals of the rose No longer crimson, dark and deep, But with a stronger, sweeter scent Of life too short. Again I wept And held to mem’ry warmer days. My love went south. Long gloomy days I dreamed of summer’s glowing leaves- But when I woke, again I wept. I knew our time was lost. The rose He gave remained behind, its scent No promise that his love was deep. And now the winter snow lies deep Against the cabin walls, my days Filled with the heavy, smoky scent Of hardwood logs and burning leaves. In freezing nights I hold the rose And think back on the time I wept. A silly girl, the child who wept For easy summer love, while deep In darkest nights she thought the rose A souvenir so rare; her days Spent listless, watching dying leaves, Entranced and saddened by their scent. True love is not kept in a scent Or mem’ry. I now know I wept For season’s change, the drying leaves An ending-yes! But there is deep Within us all a clock-the days Grow warm again and bring the rose. So breathe the scent of flowers deep, And though you wept, yet know the days Of new green leaves foretell the rose. Nan |

Nan darling heart I dub you the one who drifts among stars to harvest their light. You know I utterly utterly utterly adore this one, you do these so well, actually there’s isn’t anything that you don’t do well. It matters not whether it’s rhymed, metered, free verse, haiku, senryu and etceteras until I come to the end of time. Oh this poem is sooooooo incredibly beautiful I love this utterly, I swear you’ve written in starlight This is simply perfect as always darling and I love it I love it utterly. One day darling heart you may write something that doesn’t make me dizzy with delight, but I doubt it, your writing is always wonderful. While I have breath I will always read your words and adore them. Love and warm stuff As always Mushy Breathe through the heat of our desire |

Seymour, Serenity, Marge, Marsha, Noah, Lyra, bsquirrel, and Titia: Thanks guys! I truly appreciate your kindness. I know this is filled with inversion, and it's more or less pure sugar, but there's something about a sestina that brings that out in me. I can't help it, I just go overboard with these things. Nan |
