I sent a friend a poem titled "Are There Shadows" of which you may read below, down the board a piece. He responded with:" Very moving. Yet I am so overwhelmed with the events of that day that I wish I could erase it from my memory. So no further comments." This set about thoughts that led to the following two poems.

Too Impossible

it’s as impossible
to erase from our minds
as it is to erase
from our history

lives shattered
lives that mattered
every one

dreams wrenched
hearts drenched
in tears of overcome

upon a precipice
our nation stood
and someone ready
at the pinball machine

in the course
of human events
someone reached,
pulled, released

tumbling
through the chute
little brute
was needed
warnings unheeded

with thoughts
“They wouldn’t dare!
not there,
not anywhere!”

an evil  laugh
a taunting sneer
a raucous jeer

mocked every tear
rocked every fear
as flags rose high

“Just you try!
that again, you’ll
never win

Your trail of sin
will only spin
and pound you in
eternity’s din.

Snapping Turtle

are we
a snapping turtle
coated in shell
strong as steel
put a-reel
by some spinning hand

just waiting
for spin to cease
that we may
get a grip
and let it rip
from our jaws of agony

ever ready
now
to stick our necks out
to shred the ream out
of attackers
that dare too close

even as we retreat
to fields of wheat,
woods and meadows
beside the sea
feigning calm
feigning rest
will the test still come?

what will be
turtle soup
or shredded flies?

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

I hope, Virginia, that you will be sharing these pieces for publication in your hometown paper, or at any memorial function you may be attending in the next few weeks.  After reading your other piece yesterday, I wondered for awhile if we have nothing more to show for our resolve in ending conflicts than a showing of our red-white-blue patriotism...

I hope so.

I hope people begin showing compassion, realizing, it is one man that leads the armies...and not the armies leading the man...

so many complexities to one simple request...

"Love one another, in My name."
