~The Furry Bird~

There he stretched, this hulking bird
a breed I'd never before seen
curled around the feeder
as he ate, he looked serene

he wore the strangest coat
one I've not seen on a bird
instead of fancy feathers
he sported fluffy fur

a bewhiskered toothy mouth
sat where a beak should have been
and a fine pair of paws
took the place of feathered wings

but when he was sated
and needed to fly
off he went,paws outstretched
landing hard with a cry

ouch!

Thanks Karilea...
These birds drive us nuts...
but they are totally amusing to watch.  There are 3 young ones which were born early this spring.  Their mother kept stealing the leaves from the Aloe Vera plant when she was pregnant.
There are 2 males and a female.  I'm not positive but I think these are the male except for the second to the last one, which I think is the female because she is the most agile of the group.  Today, she hung upside down on that feeder for about 30 minutes...her little hind paws just grasping that metal ring around the top of the feeder.
Finally, she lost her grip on the metal ring, but not on the feeder...she just changed position.
The birds scare these little guys away from the feeder, by dive bombing them with their sharp beaks, so I don't worry about them stealing the food from the feathery ones...
but they seem to have no fear of us at all.

aren't they adorable.  I love to watch these birds chase each other around.
They are so fast as they chase each other up and over the deck railing almost nipping at each other's tails.

Thanks so much, Donna...
I think we should give them names, because now I think we can identify each of them.
Of the 2 males, one has a white diamond on his chest and then there's the female.  Their mother's name is Mrs. Prettytail, and their nest is in the maple tree which overhangs our deck.

Now you can have sweet dreams of squirrels invading your bird feeder...
But actually we really love these little guys and we know that the birds will get their fair share, so we let them use the feeder...but when they get too big...
Well, we'll have to find them something else to eat.

It was so funny, that one day when the squirrel literally tried to fly like a bird.
I bet all the birds were sitting in the trees laughing at him.

Watching these little guys is definitely an
awwww experience.
The female squirrel loves to eat the flowers off of our deck plants, and she is the most agile of the group.  She jumps right off that feeder onto her tree limb and it hardly bounces.  We are thinking about naming her either Flo-Jo or Olga for Olga Korbut, the gymnast.  One of the males has a white diamond shape on his chest and so we might call him Diamond.  Have you got any suggestions for a name for the other male?
These are little squirrels...they were born this past spring.

What a rip. Those pictures could have come from my back yard. I concur with all the comments you received. In fact, I have been in a battle concerning the trapping of these critters right next door to me. If you can imagine, my dogs, and I enjoy breakfast together on my balcony while the squirrels join us on branches close by eating from the feeder. We have quite a family..

I love this poem. You can't imagine the pleasure it brings. Thank you again and again.

Affectionately,
Electra

A bushy tail to no avail
to beat the birds away
Attempting to fly and soar
on each and every day.

The tail is what gave it all
away to the birds in flight
The squirrel did have a ball
on the feeder late at night.

You,  our chippermunk....are the life of
our party....  This is good....I have
a couple of those birds too....Don't
fly worth beans,  but sure can eat...

Thanks for answering me with this cute little verse, Barry..

The tail is what gave it all
away to the birds in flight
The squirrel did have a ball
on the feeder late at night.

Actually, we have to take the feeder in at night because we have a different kind of visitor then....and he is much much heavier than the squirrels.
We lost our last feeder to a raccoon, and so now we take it in every night because we don't want to keep replacing it.

These aren't flying squirrels, they are just normal squirrels who think they can fly.
I think it was just the one of them who tried that.
He kept watching the birds do it, so he figured he could do it too.
