The Error If only I could let it go, the scent of freshly moistened earth floating from the surface as the rake of the groundskeeper arced a smile of dirt around third base; the lack of sense to watch him work, quick, deliberate, his teeth sparkling through a grin as focused as the white chalk baseline over which he gingerly stepped when he left the infield; the light prophetic of his tone as "She's a hot one," tracked me onto the diamond; the nervous arrogance of cleats scratching imaginary smoothness into a field already perfect; the spit; the slap into the glove; the wink of recognition at the sudden glimpse of my girlfriend pressed up against the fence; the crack-like sound and the instant, eternal remembrance of a chance missed.
