He used to tend his garden in the rain. "Do the work, while the ground is soft." He wore the weather in his eyes, and the lines of his face were pages of days of sun's drench- sweat. He cast Texas shadows in that sun, shielding me from wither. his grip of hand an iron glove tempered strong from years of clutch tenacity of life and love-- he caught me everytime I slipped while running barefoot through the grass... He grew marigolds of joy-- abundant-- almost size of shrub. I dared to ask his secret once (I coddled mine so carefully) and I saw meager bloom. I laughed out loud in disbelief as he brought his foot down on a plant. "That's what I do." He laughed at me. And then he stooped down to explain. "This plant will just grow stronger now-- if something in it wants to grow." I looked at him as if insane-- "But just suppose it up and dies?" I had my hand on hip, annoyed. We stood together, looking down, and then he said: "There ain't no guarantee of life-- but death is coming anyway. Sometimes you need a good foot-stomp incentive helps to choose to bloom." He looked at me and smiled a shrug. "What else is there to do?" W.W. Hood 10/17/27--7/19/01 "trying to bloom, Dad..." |

Oh Karen...this is such an unbelievably beautiful tribute to your Dad... I can tell that he was a very special person. There ain't no guarantee of life-- but death is coming anyway. Sometimes you need a good foot-stomp incentive helps to choose to bloom." I especially loved this part...it reminds me of my own reality, this past year. Thanks for sharing this with us. ~ hugs from the heart Lyra |

Well this cowboy thinks you have bloomed quite well and you spread your blossoms of joy every time you approach. This is one of the most powerful tributes I have read in here. Totally loved it. BTW ... I will work on the request if you promise to hold JM at bay as she has asked me many times to do the same. Just promise not to laugh at the attempt okay? |

Oh brother is he ever alive in you! This truly is the best poem of respect and love I think I have ever read, including my own , looking on the light side. If he taught you this, there are so many more lessons you have to share with us. Some of us never had that kind of parenting so speak to us all that he taught you, I for one will listen. Oh Serenity, you were were truly loved, what greater gift is there on earth than that? So thank you for sharing that. And to agree with JM, yes have you ever blossomed big time. Nothing means more to me than faith, |

Karen What a loving portrait of your dad...I love the idea behind the foot stomp...in fact, I'm going to try it. I can see why you loved him so much, with just this one scene, you captured the interaction of father and daughter so well. And like Eric said, I can see you hand on hip still... |
