Thin long grass I sit in this summer heat in my grandmother’s hickory-stick rocker cabin furniture to her porch furniture to me I feel large in it though I am not they were smaller then The companion chair is here and empty would you like to come sit and visit The lights are out the neighbors won’t see we can listen to the breeze and talk about our poetry or maybe these chairs Don’t mind my cats they’ll come and go to the window’s ledges they’ll greet us in passing My grandfather’s lake cottage has been gone for some time now sold it he did the rat But sitting here I can remember the warm details that a child notices The smell of the fish fry at the end of the day and the family gathering around that long table The imagined fish that bent the stressed arc into his bamboo fly rod hung above the windows The porch bathed in a flickering glow of the reflected evening sun The slightly musty odor that rose up when you sat on the old squeaky bed The odd pungent smell of the lake when it went blue-green later on in the summer The red squirrels that would try to chew their way in every fall and sometimes did The wet wooden dock he put in every year that I slipped off of one day and nearly drowned The rickety stairs that stumbled up the steep eroding bank and the bur oak trees at the top The thin long grass It’s all still here lingering in these old cabin chairs Come sit with me the evening is young © 071102 |

You made me feel as if I was really there! I would love to sit with you and experience all of those sensations again. Enjoyed this very much. Kitty If you can't make it so, |

This comes off as a bit more of a list poem than I had intended, but helps fix those still vivid memories. Thank you for reading. |

(smiles) Oh my gosh, I love this, sweet friend, this reminded me of spending a time in a cabin in West Virginia, it was delightful and the scent of the pines and trees down there always made me smile and the country cooking! (big hugggssssss) This is wonderful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet E.J, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you!
