THE STOCKMAN & CO Behind; the bark of loyalty and the miles that we have come Of pastures over eaten and a land that’s overrun Where the morning started early, while the sun was still asleep When the homeward gate was opened and the stockman drove his sheep His stead beneath his saddle, a mate till life would end The land, a changing masterpiece, his challenge, love and friend Through land of undulations, through the creek beds by the way In life of timeless duty does each stockman join the day He’s breed to love the country, and the tracks that vein the land His heart filled with a passion, which just stockmen understand Hooves which set the pace of day, the heat the times of rest Each waterhole, a spa of bliss, each moment time of test Past miles and miles of fencing, where the boundaries meet to end To pastures for the hungry, where the rain the green did send Past ghost gums that are giants, on the track of dust and earth Not a breath of wind does blow, just man and beast and worth Passing miles beneath him, as the sheep before him run The gate, which marks the journeys end, they’ll sight when day is done Companions all around him, each true and loyal a friend Through dust and rain and hardship, till the journey comes to end By the fallen limbs and fences, on a land of hill and rough Goes the stockman and companions, on that daily road of tough Inspired by a painting by Hans Heysen Sincerly Rick |
