No closing words nor whispered prayers, simply the sounds of scribbling — three signatures needed to witness this last act. A short walk - a slippery floor down a dim corridor, not to say goodbye, really, to get beyond THIS. With those twenty-odd tubes removed, we hear our own breathing and the slowing blip on a screen that sends signals in one monotone, stretching moment. Later, I reflect, on Mother’s revelation to rejoin the church; my Brother’s sudden anger — ancient lesions reopening; and my detachment, conjoined by an awareness of how dark it gets. © 2002 C.M.
