Here's the story:

For my creative writing class I'm required to complete a 50 page "major work" upon which much of my grade will rely.  In order to accomplish this feat I've decided to write a sonnet every day which, when coupled with whatever other poetic works I complete before the end of the year, should compose a rather impressive little book of poetry.

The only thing that is going to be problematic in this is my sense of devotion.  Now, I know it's easier to get through things like this when you have a lot of other people doing it at the same time... such as diets, quitting smoking, et cetera.  I've already convinced Carly (Child of the Stars) to try and keep up with it and pester me about writing my sonnet every day.  She's also going to make an effort towards turning out sonnets regularly, which will help.

Any other takers?  I've been doing this for a week and I find it's actually really rewarding.  Here are the sonnet "rules" I'm going by:

1. Sonnet format.  Which means, fourteen lines, iambic pentameter, and a definite rhyme pattern.  By "definite" rhyme pattern, I mean something organized and neat, with at most one shift (petrarchan is abbaabbacdecde, and you can clearly see where that shift appears) in the rhyme pattern.

2.  Number, don't title, them.  Add a little subtitle beneath them if you wish (such as, "for my dead cat," or something) so that you have a clear idea what it's about or what inspired it.

3.  Make each one represent the day in which it was written somehow.

I'd really be grateful if you guys would be willing to join me in this.  You don't have to post every one of them, maybe only post the ones you're particularly proud of, but try to make it clear in the title of the post that it's written for this challenge so I don't let it slip by me.

I'm having fun with this already and I encourage all of you to try it.  Best of luck and happy sonneting!

Brian

But microscopes are prudent
In an emergency.

A sonnet a day?

Is that including false starts, rejects, re-writes, edits and final polishing?

I'll just wish you luck.

Well, Brian...it just so happens that I
posted a sonnet in Open #29 this morning.

I don't know that I can promise a sonnet a day,
but I'll make an effort to do them as often as possible.
You know how much I enjoy iambics.

I wish you luck and lots of motivation.
I know you can do it if you put your mind to it.

Shall we make October "Sonnet" month in the workshop, LP?  Does your assignment last that long?  Mayhaps we can get some support going here...

I have never ever written a sonnet.

I wish that I could write Bri a sonnet,
or at least toss to him a cheery bonnet!
But alas my brain, 'tis far too feeble,
and I must admit all I can write is scribble.

LOL, at least you gave me a good laugh. So did Capt Ron

Good luck!

a perfect Shakespearean?
(cant I smudge it jus a lil?)
please . . .

What a challenge . . .
I love the idea of it being
from each day, this way it is sort
of like a little book of its own of emotions

Okay, I'm game..but? I think I've told you this before, although YOU seem to think I have no trouble with meter, I do actually--

those split segmented lines of mine are more to do with me trying to control the pace of the reader than with any knowledge of scansion, meter or time. I tend to write more to treble clef...am I making sense here?

Smile. Prolly not.

So, if you can make me understand iambic pentameter? I will try to corral my unruly thoughts into that.

Deal?

(say deal.)

Talk to me.

I would like to write a sonnet a day, but that might be impossible.   Tried it once, two years ago, wasn't too horrible...  Didn't last very long, though.

However, I am up to your challenge, only it might be weekly sonnets or something..  this could get interesting as you know I don't usually write anything too... structured?

Best wishes to you, Brian.

How about if I just applaud you and move you on to more by request?  I've got enough spirits asking me to do all I can do for now....
