If anyone could throw out some inspirational ideas that could make the starting of a good poem, I'd be much obliged. Anything that could get me writing would be good. The "Completely Uninspired" Green Polar Bear |

I think good ideas actually come in pairs. I don't know how many times I've had what I thought was a workable idea, but there just wasn't enough meat on the bone to give it flesh. Only when another idea came along, something that at first might not even seem related, to join with the first idea did something come to light. Any way, having said that - here's one thought (and maybe you can find its brethern). It's one I've tried to write a couple of times in the past several months, but nothing ever comes out quite right. Johnny's favorite thing in the whole world is coloring. He will spend hours with his crayons, taking immense delight and pleasure in the results. Trouble is, his colorings are really ugly. "Color in the lines," his mother says. "Color in the lines," his teachers admonish. He tries, he really does. But within minutes of picking up the crayons, little Johnny get so involved with his picture that he forgets. "Color in the lines," everyone tells him. And, eventually, Johnny learns what the whole world has been encouraging him to learn. He produces his first picture, beautiful and perfect, with every color carefully placed within the lines. His teacher is excited. His mother is proud. But Johnny, alas, never colors another picture. He has discovered that with perfection there is no satisfaction, that without spontaneity there can be no joy. Oh, uh, something like that... HTM Ron |

I have a friend who sends me phrases (he actually just throws words together) and I HAVE to write a poem using the phrase (one phrase per poem). Sometimes it's really hard, he uses Biblical phrases and SciFi phrases a lot! Here are his latest: Have you forgotten? (I just posted this poem) In honor of the paladin Was Cleopatra in love? He dropped me into the pit of vipers. The peacekeepers fell one after another, but on they came. I hear what he wants me to hear. I see what he wishes me to see. Have a go if you like! Good luck! |

When trying to develop a topic to write about I usually think about an emotional time in my life and try to express my thoughts and feelings in verse. The interesting thing about doing this is that as you age and your perspective on life changes, your outlook on those emotional events do too. Either write from the perspective you have now or try to relive those thoughts and feelings amd see what happens! |

Something I often do is take an event (or person) that was very dark and dreery, and turn it into something bright. When i get writers block, I often do this, and it gets the ball rolling.....for example, think about something morbid, the death of someone close to you. Now turn it into something inspirational..... |

Check out Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock". That's a REALLY funny poem(long, though, because it's a mock epic). Try making your own mock epic which makes fun of something, like the US election, lol(if you're the politically minded sort). But you could also make fun of life in a class in highschool or college, where there are some who are rather *odd*, shall we say... |
