Death In The Cemetery

Been spending time in the cemetery,
going from grave to grave,
reading tombstones -
standing in long moments of thought -
sitting beneath trees -
wrestling with things - memories.

'Sally was thirteen', it says,
'best wife I ever had.  1875 - 1888'.

Thirteen.
Funny I should read THIS epitaph.
It was thirteen years today
that first I lay eyes on you.
Thirteen years ... of memories.

Oak above my head,
rough bark of its trunk aganist my back,
sitting at the side of Sallys grave
I wonder - was she blonde, like you -
did she have blue eyes,
lips that gave new meaning to soft -
hands meant to touch -
heart so beautiful heaven basked in its glow.

Cemeteries,
quiet, peaceful corners
where the weary rest their bones,
the living come to cry tears they're afraid to show,
at home - where I come, more and more,
hoping to leave the past behind.

There is death, in the cemetery,
where  things that have died, reside -
but not these memories -
memories that tear me up, inside,
that won't stay behind ...
with the rest of things,
that died.

Well done.  Much like the feelings I expect to feel when I finally make the trek to "the wall."

James, I too find cemeteries quiet, and comforting, in that there is still the touch, and the sound of the wind, to soothe the soul...

James darling boy this is wonderful writing it simply throbs with an ache threaded through it. I can feel the separation deep in my soul in this. You’ve written this so incredibly well. Not many people can write emotion as well as this is, it’s excellent. This is utterly utterly Wonderful writing Graveyards are strange places peaceful yet so full of sadness. You are an amazing writer

Jimmy,  this is surely one of your best
poems to date...  You drew the picture
with your words..bringing out the feelings
of the scene...so very well...

This is absolutely a great piece of work. It aches and wrings and whispers and dreams  emotion.  I could hear a voice speaking it as I read. Beautifully done...

This is a great poem. I enjoy going to cemeteries and reading the tombstones and imagining what every person there must have been like, and what their life entailed. I'm sure you loved your wife so very much.

It certainly is a great place to reflect and become more complete at heart!
Compassion seems to ooze out of the heart and through the mind.
This is a very enjoyable read James!

You are wonderfully sensitive to the written word!  Lovely work jwesley~
