notes from the ministry
of love

Might I sit here one minute more to think,
to contemplate what is real.  I listen
as anyone can listen in this place, this link
between hunger and truth.

The other is off somewhere tonight,
pouting; I make no bones about his flaw,
that he might think he talks
and that one might reply with sense.

But you, I've told you all,
or all that I will say yet:
that there is this thing inside, crawling around,
and will not stop.  And that you know, but not what.

It will insist upon the most trivial things,
gnawing what the other takes for Love, love.
But I know he's an idiot.  I apologize,
I do,
but even so, he comes and goes,

while I wait for that moment when the wise
bring on the rats.

I've been here before, but you have wandered.
And we can't have that.  Not here.
And yes, yes, I knew
what it could, and could still, do.

But,
What would you have me say, love?
Love you forever and a day, love?
There's more here
than just a metal cage, love.
