What is a Mother?
written for my Mother this Mother's Day

A mother is a cradle of soft hands and kind spirit
her voice is the very first music we ever hear
even before we are born
the beating of her heart, warms our soul
it's steady rhythm provides unwavering security
a steadfast measure of life itself

a mother is trust
it is she who is always there for us
even in the bleakest of times
she will shelter us from anguish and sorrow
wearing her softest shoulder
to absorb the pain of our heartbreak and tears

a mother is a warm hug on a cold day
her light glows brightly
even in the depths of our darkest nights
she wraps us in a blanket of comfort
when the world shows us the harsh face of cruelty

a mother is love in it's purest form
her unswerving devotion
protects us when we are young and vulnerable
but sets us free to try our own wings
after she has taught us to fly

you are my mother
you have cradled me with your soft hands
and loved me with your warm heart
you have always been there for me
a soft shoulder
a comfortable blanket of protection

you have always loved me and sheltered me
but have had the wisdom
to know when to set me free

you are my mother
and I will always love you

Lyra Hi there finally I get to say hello and leave a note on your poems. I’m Emma the youngest, and the prettiest of Mushy’s daughters. And I’ve long been an admirer of your writing.

This is a particularly fine example of your excellent writing a really beautiful poem from you and I love it as I’m sure every mother will. Warm hugs and best wishes to you

lots of love
Emma

Lyra, it is hard for me to find words when replying to others poems about Mothers as my own passed on at such a young age....but this truly is beautiful.....thank you for sharing.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Noah...
Do you happen to know how I can make the picture a bit smaller?
When I copied it, it was smaller and it came out bigger here.
I know how to make it smaller when I copy it to my disc, but don't know how to put the smaller version on here...
Any help would be most appreciated.

Welcome to Piptalk, Emma...it looks like Marsha's progeny are finally getting hold of her computer...
You say you don't write poetry, but if you stick around this place long enough, I bet you'll be writing well in no time.

That is quite an amazing compliment, but I must tell you, that I have thought the same about your poetry many times.

Madame Chipmunk...

This beautiful poem has captured my first reply, and many perfect tears.  Aside from being just 4 weeks post-partum (and that has NOTHING to do with the tears- ha!), your writing has engaged so many different emotions that are borne and experienced as a mother, and as a child.  Understanding the relationship between a mother and a child is an overpowering wave that surpasses any other bond.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone in the forums, including all the menfolk, too, as you had to come from "somewhere".  Thank you for a wonderfully soothing read.  I'm going to go hug my kids now!

Thanks for that heartwarming reply, Sydney and welcome to Passions.
I can't tell you how flattered I am that you have chosen my poem as your very first reply here.
I agree with you about the interplay between the love of Mother and child and of course, thats what the poem is all about.

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby and I wish you a happy Mother's Day too.
BTW...I love your name My3monkeytoes and would love to know it's origin.
