Just ran a scan of my system and good ole Norton detected a spyware of the look2me variety. So what did my trusty Norton do? Nothing. It won't delete or even quarantine the file. Norton's website tells me if Norton can't remove it(then what's the point other than detection?) to remove it manually. No go, the file cannot be removed by any means. The only thing left for me to do was use my firewall's application settings to terminate or at least block it's activity. Lovely ain't it? I've been meaning to do a reinstall anyway but this is ridiculous.

I don't use an AV program, Raph, but word in the development communities I frequent has it that Norton is about the weakest one available. Most think it sucks. There's also growing unrest that many of the major AV suppliers, including both Norton and McCaffe, don't consider spyware or adware to be viruses.

Thanks Ron, I suspected as much(doesn't microsoft own Norton?) and will be trying out new ones this week. The only reason I have an anti-virus installed is because other people use my computer.

One worth a try is AVG, from http://www.grisoft.com . They offer a free version, 6, and weekly, if not daily or more often, updates. These are normally definition updates. About the only things it can't handle are adware, spyware, and embedded, but it will give the location of where the embedded file is located so it can be manually deleted. Also, it isn't as resource intensive as some of the others, and scanning a particular file or folder is super easy.

Thanks Alicat, I'll check it out.
I know exactly where it is but cannot delete the damn file maunually or otherwise. It's really frustrating and I've found nothing on the net to eliminate the sucker. I'll probably reinstall windows soon so it's not a huge issue but a huge annoyance with Norton and co.

I have AVG 7, professional version, and it was less than $40 for two years fulltime coverage. But as you said, Alicat, it doesn't deal with embedded files. I have three recurring ones that I have not been able to isolate or 'heal,' so hopefully, they aren't really bothersome? They are all three trojans, and two are located in my daughter's PWS file. So far, I can't detect any real problems on my PC.
Raph, I think Norton used to be good, but has slipped in the past three or four years. None of the programmers or web designers I know use it anymore. Everyone seems to be happy with the standard free AVG. I only upgraded to 7.0 prof version because 6.0 didn't do anything to those viruses, and so far, the paid-for version doesn't either !!!
