I'm getting really tired of my current host (Icom.com) and will be changing it in a few months when this initial contract is up.

Have you (et al) started developing in ASP yet?

Actually, no. I considered going ASP (even bought a book), but since ICOM is unix based... LOL.

I would love to go to ASP, honestly and truly... but really don't know enough to get there. On my list of things to do, is several classes at the Uni here to gain some programming skills. I learn fairly quick and am interested for personal reasons... but you know how those lists work. For the immediate time being, I'd rather stick with CGI, since I can "read" enough of it to do a little modification.

If that's what you were asking...?

Actually, I asked because I remember a comment in your forums about doing something or other with ASP - so I just assumed you were on NT. Guess I should have looked before jumping to that conclusion.

IMO, the only two reasons to even consider NT is, one, you already know Visual Basic (which is essentially all ASP is) or, two, you have a MS database like Access or SQL Server that you need to access. I asked because, if you were already committed to NT, I didn't want to suggest something else.

So, what are you looking for?

Actually Ron - it was my mistake that led you to that conclusion, since at the time I didn't realize that ASP required a Windows server. I had gotten all excited about it at work, since the tech guru there told me about it's many advantages... uhmm... so I'm still learning!

What I'm looking for is someone reliable. The server for www.countlesshorizons.com has gone down probably a good dozen times in less than a year. The email client goes down constantly, and I've found the ICOM personnel to not only be less than helpful, but also somewhat reluctant to reply when an issue is addressed. It took me two months for them to finally accept my order for logs - and I eventually cancelled out an order for space for another domain, because they were being so difficult. That site will probably be on hold until CH is transferred, but it still irks me that they've been so difficult.

I don't need a lot of space just yet, though I of course want to be able to increase disk space when needed at a fairly reasonable price.

I don't know how standard it is, but I need hosting which will allow email transfer, through forms, etc.

Needs to be UNIX based.

One where I could TelNet would be awesome, you can't with ICOM.

Uhmm... if I think of anythign else, I'll add it to the list. I don't want to be too picky, but there's no point in having a service if it's not serving you.

Two of our domains (netpoets.net and poetry-magainze.com) are still with a company called TierraNet, at least for a few more weeks. At one time, netpoets.com was with them, too. San Diego based. Absolutely rock-solid in terms of always being up (in truth, all IPP's go down, I've just never seen it happen at Tierra). Like so many hosts, however, they do not allow telnet access. In fact, it's only been within the last two years they started supporting cgi beyond their own installed scripts.

When netpoets.com moved from TierraNet, we went with a hosting company called FutureQuest. Husband and wife team in Florida (near Orlando), who met while working for a big IPP and went out on their own. He's a techie and she's just a terrific lady. Their packages reflect their background and they have just about every possible technical tool you can imagine available, including Telnet access. FQ isn't as rock-solid as Tierra, partly because they give their clients enough power to bring down the servers, mostly because they themselves tend to run things on the bleeding edge. On the other hand, they do have an up-time guarantee (99% up-time or you pay nothing for the month) and, unlike other hosting companies, live up to it.

Bad side. Both of these companies put a "throttle" on netpoets.com when our traffic started increasing. Rather than charge me more or ask me to move, they installed software that artificially and purposely slowed down connections, thereby discouraging visitors from staying at Passions. Tierra never admitted to it, FQ told me about it up front. I've since discovered this is fairly standard practice in the industry. All hosts price their packages on the supposition that the "average" usage of the machine will be substantially less than they promise is available to everyone. And their gamble usually pays off. When a site like netpoets.com comes along, it kinda throws the average out the window.

Those are the only two I could personally recommend, but I know of quite a few others from people at the UBB and at VP. FWIW, several of my friends over at VP have moved to FQ based on my recommendations and have been very happy. A friend you and I once had in common is at Tierra.

Future Quest looks like a great place - between the prices, packages, and the (I've already discovered because of an error I made and had to follow up on) extremely prompt and courteous service!

Thank you ROn - this looks like it will eb a great place to run my own domains off of once my CH contract runs out!
