I disagree. Most are just incompetent. AOL, on the other hand, is incompetent and evil. |

And a shame we have to pay for them as well. But really, I know a lot of people have had a lot of problems with them, my parents for one. I on the other hand haven't. Once in a while I'll get booted off, but that's rare. But the cost I tell ya is something we can argue about. LOL |

I think AT&T Worldnet is just wonderful! DirectWeb is still down. They finally stopped charging me on my credit card, but still no word on if or when they will start providing service again...incompetent for sure. The way that they treat customers is disgraceful. They don't deserve to be in business. As for connection and speed....I didn't know how bad I had it with DirectWeb until I started using AT&T. What a difference. My daughter was using AOL for a week or so. She was lucky to be online for 10 minutes before being disconnected. It happened every time she tried. But I would highly recommend AT&T to anyone! |

AT&T is a decent ISP, but I agree with Chris. Especially when I've invested 10 or so hours into my new EverQuest Character and feel confident enough to take out a high level monster, only to suffer ultimate lag and have my poor little wood elf slain! THE INHUMANITY! Stop the elf slaying, let no more good gamers be the subjects of bad situations! I think Net Zero is still around. Though you only get limited hours, it's hard to find a 'local number' for them. And there's no guarantee you will get on during congested hours. |

You and your Cable Sharon - yes, it's good... but you still have to deal with an ISP. I've been through a good dozen over the past few years and haven't found a single one that's provided completely satisfactory service. When I had a normal modem, I often had difficulties getting online (AOL was the biggest culprit here - no shock). I had issues with getting cut off, slow connections, bogged down lines, etc... Now that I've switched to DSL, I don't have those problems... instead, my email client goes down frequently (meaning every two months or so), the routers go down on average of about a day a month, and don't even get me started on billing issues! I think though that these are probably increased with free services. Then, you're completely at their mercy. On top of that, you have to have not only your RAM, but often your Hard Drive filled with advertisement crap. I think NetZero (if I remember correctly) is the one where you have to click on a banner at least once every half hour or you get bumped offline. Then there's the junkmail!!! You think having a hotmail account is bad! All in all, I think if you can afford and justify a paid account - go with it. In the US at least, you can get an account with a major company for around $20.00 a month, and can often find local providers who will give you unlimited access for $10.00 or so a month. Peace, C |

I've always tried to find local ISP's, for various reasons, primarily so that if anything hiccuped, I could directly yell at someone. Kinda hard to do with the AOL consortium. There used to be a HUGE amount of ISP's out there, but slowly, they have been assimilated by the great beast (anyone remember GEnie?). My mom thought of and used CompuServe, until she got the bill. Closest node was 45 miles away, so she had long distance charges, off-site nodal charges, as well as basic use charges, for about 10 minutes (if lucky) of usage. I think her main problem was trying this on a (gasp) 5.6K modem. ROFL I've tried some of the 'free' ISP's, but don't care too much for all the garbage they leave on my system, not to mention the ad banners that submit my user info across the board. Nope, don't care for that at all. I think the best I ever had was a small ISP about 3 blocks from where I lived in Texas, called Beaman's (they were a video/pc rental store with aspiritions). If ever I had a prob, I could just walk down there and see what was up...was usually from them adding yet another router due to increased traffic. If you can't go cable (nudge Sharon) then go local. Competition will work in your best interest. Alicat |

I use EV1.net (everyones internet) - Ten bucks a month - no fuss/no muss, true unlimited access and time - in two years have had almost zero problems - no access problems, kicked off maybe twice, ISP outages, I think two for maybe an hour or two...that's it...love it; got the basic setup - don't need more than that, but they offer much more - still cheap - not sure what states are served by them ATT. Texas I know since I live there. jwesley |

Well, I'm still connected! I find it rather odd that Cox Communications hasn't sent out emails or snail mail letters to it's Internet customers. I think even if the company is able to provide service they will lose a lot of customers because of how they handled this. If I should disappear, please light a cyber candle in the window of your browser for me! |

I'm still connected. Want to hear something outrageous? In my mail today is a letter from Cox Communications. Was it the explanation I'd been hoping for? Was it a letter telling me I'm a valuable customer and they are working hard to provide me with the service I've come to expect? No! (Laughing here) They are increasing my payment by $5.00 a month!!! LOL Can you imagine that???!!!!! I'm laughing so hard I almost wet myself!!! LOL Whew!! I think I have to write them a thank you note - where's my poison pen? |
