I have two 'ergonomic' keyboards at home (and one at work. I love them. But as you know, they tend to get dirty (who's been eating at MY desk?).

Anyway, a while back Ron said he has two favorite keyboards and he will use one and when it gets dirty, he'll soak it in the tub and use the other one.

I scoffed. (HA! That will teach me)

So about a month ago, I soaked one of my keyboards. I trembled yesterday when I decided to put it back on my computer and clean this one. Well what do you think?

It works!!!! I have a nice clean keyboard...and I soaked the other one and it's now sitting there drying (upside down).

Thanks for the tip Ron!!!

As long as it's all dried up

Okay, more tips, please, on soaking.

Other than water, are any detergents added?
What's the safest amount of drying time?

And what side-effects, if any, could possibly be experienced?

I didn't measure the soap (it was Dawn btw). Just a couple of small squirts. And since I have 2 keyboards, I don't switch them but maybe every few months. I would say at least a week drying time (upside down preferably).

I usually spray mine down real good with Windex, but I'm sure any "reasonable" cleaning product would work fine. Reasonable, as in, it probably shouldn't be strong enough to melt concrete.

The drying time is going to depend on your climate. Where Sharon lives, the air rarely holds much humidity and her keyboard was probably dry the next day. Arizona is so dry, she could likely have left it sitting in the bathtub and it still would have been dry in a week.

It would take much, much longer in Michigan. I've used a hair dryer in the past to "rush" the process a little, but that's a dangerous thing. I have also considered putting the keyboard in the oven, on the lowest possible setting, but never actually tried it. I suspect the best thing is just patience. I would probably give it at least five to seven days to dry, just to be on the safe side.

Side-effects are simple. Since water is a conductor, a drop of it has the potential to fry the insides of your keyboard. It will NOT hurt your computer, though, so the most you can lose is the keyboard.

you can also pop off each key one at a time then clean it if you want
