Nothing seems to make working with all these fun programing languages better than using a tool that doesn't cost a bundle and is easier to use. The reason I am posting here to share info and see if possible I can find other tools that will help in the accomplishment of writing in Perl; CGI; etc... Currently I use an Eval version of Multi-Edit. http://www.multiedit.com/ I find this blocks my perl nicely and makes those common errors of not closing blocks and qoutes easier to find. The only problem I've seen with this is that if you use the eval it brings up a 50 sec window for ordering info. During which time I'm frantically writing my thoughts down on paper. Are there any other programs out there that make writing perl easier? [This message has been edited by kelieth (edited 06-09-2001).] |

Hello, Im far from an experienced programmer mind you! I've been using HomeSite4.5 ( http://www.allaire.com/products/homesite/homesite.cfm ) for about a year or so now an LOVE it. It works exceptionally well for HTML, JavaScript, and now, it seems, Perl. Among other things, it gives you the ability to (yep, tried it here and it worked too Ron) hit ctrl+M and find a matching tag. Also, you can customize the program and like I recently did, have it automatically close any brackets you open! You can adjust everything according to color and weight, etc. It's a great program. I don't know how much is too much... HomeSite runs $89 for an electronic license. You can go to their website and d/l the evaluation copy if you're interested. Also, Ron led me to another editor which is similar to notepad, but quite a bit more functional. It has the ability to do things such as find matching tags as well. http://textpad.com/ I think it's about $20 for a license of textpad, but I'm not sure. Good luck, C  |

FWIW, Allaire was recently purchased by Macromedia - so HomeSite is now bundled with Dreamweaver, too. |

That's right Ron, I'd forgotten about that. Should prove interesting! A note I should add regarding HomeSite is that it's a resource HOG! The most recent release (4.52) has addressed that issue and is a bit better, but you still won't want to run much other than it unless you have a large amount of RAM (I run 256M). Peace, C |

I would like to thank you both for the information again. I checked out the textpad and dreamweaver. I was unable to get directly to Allaire for download it seems like they are having site maintanence. I will take a look at Allaire and again wish to thank both of you. So far I still prefer multi-edit and it runs about $189 for registration. It's very versatile and seems to handle everything I'll need from html, xhtml, perl, java and more languages that I don't know yet. In addition it has it's own ftp program for uploading so as not to hose up your programming should it require ascii ftp uploading. It doesn't seem to be the memory hog I've seen several other programs as. In addition with the proper add ins it has a debugging feature that I havn't fully explored yet. All in all it seems to have been fully reliable for me I was just curious as to what else was out there and want to thank you both again.
