I don't have XP, but I'm trying to help someone with something and their computer has XP.

When they bring up Explorer, they have no file extensions showing.

Is there a setting somewhere in XP to ensure that when you bring up Explorer, that the file extensions show?

I have XP and never heard of this..it must be a setting somewhere...maybe internet options?

Windows Explorer, right? Not Internet Explorer.

That's part of Windows all the way back to Win95, and is the default behavior for Explorer. A case of Microsoft trying to protect us from too much detail. Trouble is, I don't know where to find the setting in XP.

In Windows Explorer '98 version, go to View in the Explorer menu, then Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Under the File and Folders section, look for "Hide file extensions for known file types." Take the check mark off that and you'll have your extensions returned to you. (While you're at it, though, you might want to remove the check mark for "Do not show hidden files.")

I can guarantee you, Kit, it's not in the same place for XP. But maybe that will give you an idea of what to look for?

Thanks, Sharon. I'll give it a shot Ron. Boy, what a frustrating program. It tries to be intelligent, and yet, makes people like me who want detail ... look, well .. ummm stupid? Are computers these days smarter, or dumber? Sigh ...

Windows Explorer is located here.... Start - Programs - Accessories - Windows Explorer

Once you're into Windows Explorer, navigate to the file you want - When it's highlighted, look over to the left of the window... There's a vertical menu there with three or four sections "File & Folder Tasks" - "Other Places" - "Details"

"Details" should give you the file extension info...

Now - Can somebody show me how to make my XP and ME bond again? They only did it once - and it wasn't enough... I've got "stuff" to move so I can upgrade my poor laptop to a working system...
