Alright, I have a site, and, I don't think that it looks too bad (though I could be wrong), but, where do people think it is best to promote one's site? And how might one best go about this?
(I'm good with computers, not people ~_~)

- Adding the site to search engines is rather standard.
- Joining a webring is also nice, and adds hits.
- Press-releases to the media could be nice if your site has something new and exciting to offer.
- Some use newsgroups to promote their sites.
- Adding logo with URL on t-shirts, caps, cars, etc

In my opinion, adding your site to a webring is very smart. I had a site on a webring, and I got a decent boost in hits.

- Adding the site to search engines is rather standard, and is a LOT more complicated than most think. Getting into a search engine takes little more than time, but doesn't get you much traffic if you're on page 55 of the results.
- Joining a webring is also nice, and adds hits, especially for the guy running the web ring. All web rings are NOT created equal. Some will bring you traffic, but many many of them just siphon YOUR traffic away.
- Press-releases to the media could be nice if your site has something new and exciting to offer, but should ONLY be done when you're ready. PR can be a double-edged sword, and while appearing in someone's "Worst of the Week" will bring you traffic, it's probably not the kind you want.
- Some use newsgroups to promote their sites, and quickly get branded as spammers unless they know HOW to do it. Contributing to newsgroups, with a one-line link in your signature is good. Posting advertisements, telling everyone how great your site is, will kill ya.
- Adding logo with URL on t-shirts, caps, cars, etc is probably more expensive than most can afford. Adding your URL to every email you send, however, is cheap and can be equally effective. And if you don't have it in your Profile here at Passions, you are definitely missing the boat.

Promoting a web site is NOT easy, and there are probably far more myths circulating than you could imagine. I know people making high six-figure incomes who do nothing else but help others get traffic, and they couldn't charge what they charge if it was something as easy as learning HTML or JavaScript.

Oh, yes, we have a LOT to talk about in here.

Geir, I apologize if the format of my post suggests yours was wrong, 'cause it wasn't and I didn't mean to suggest it was. I guess I coulda been more circumspect.

My point was that a lot of the pat answers we ALL hear every day are over-simplifications of a very complex subject. If we want to talk about web site promotion, we need to narrow the focus and discuss specific issues, because generalized questions will only beget generalized answers - with so many exceptions the answer is bound to be wrong as often as right.

Let's dig more deeply and find the truth…
