Ok, I'm doing my homework and my problem really isn't html...so bear with me. I am doing a hypothetical web site for a non-profit organization. One of the questions is: "What type of computer and connection speed will you typical vistor have" Now, I don't know one computer from the other, I couldn't even tell you what I'm on. LOL I'm on a 56K modem, but not sure if that's what is typical or is it a 28K? Help? |

That's a very good question!  One thing I learned in my web design class (which was three or so years ago - LOTS change in that time) is that when you consider that particular question, your typical user shouldn't be 'every' single person connected to the internet. What you want to think about is your target audience. The internet is big - way big, and there are SO many different types of people, systems, and connections involved. What's most important, is what the people your business is targeting as an audience, are using. For an example: Say you're a Flash driven web-site designer. Your target audience may be very large business, or consumers that can kick the extra cost for DSL or a T connection. They'll be running state-of-the art, or as close as you can come to an industry that changes monthly. They'll have the newest version browser and a high-speed connection. You're not too worried about the fact that the users with a 56k modem have to wait 10 minutes for your Flash movie to load, and even then, it's shaky. It's all about your target. I work for a not-for-profit membership organization. When we developed our web site, we geared it towards the average to even lower end systems. 28-56k modem speed (we didn't even consider DSL, cable, or ISDN), we were careful about graphics - our links are smallish, there are few scripts written into the page. We tried to take into account that some people would be using Netscape, along with IE. Thing is though, our organization has a very specific purpose - and it was very easy to pinpoint who are target audience was. Hope that helps some? |

I tink you're right - and Nic, you might want to think about moving this to Site Design... though, LOL, it's new so we have some leeway. To your question Becca, personally, I think Nic's on the right track. It DOES depend completely on your customer base. Caveat: I think it's fairly safe to shoot toward the 28.8/56k range, since anyone with higher connections will only get really fast loading pages! As an aside - I think it's fairly standard for people to have a 56k modem... but most will tell you that they also rarely connect at said 56k. From experience and hearsay, I guess that most connections on a normal 56k modem range between 36 and 46k. C [This message has been edited by Christopher (edited 02-07-2001).] |

No one connected to the internet will ever reach 56k with their 56k modem, the top-out transmit speed on a phone line is like 52-53k...or something like that. (LOL I think, I know it tops out somewhere under 56k, and it's written in the margin of one of my books in my backpack - in the trunk of my car)  |

I do not agree with Nicole. The content of the site should always be accessible to everyone, regardless of their connection, or your target group. One way you can do that is make two versions of the site, one for those with high bandwitdh, and one for those on with low bandwitdh. On the other side, a non-profit organization usually wants as many hits as they can get. Many still sits on 56k modem, and the content should not take more than a few seconds to load. At least I never wait more than 10 seconds for a page to load. Takes it longer than that I usually abort the connection, and browse someplace else. I sit on a 256k connection. Hope it helps. Thank you all! I agree in the sense that it should be made so all can access it. If they have DSL or something other than that, then they'll get a faster connection is all. To make two of them though for different speeds, kind of defeats the purpose I think. Thank you all for your input! It's greatly appreciated |
