That is the question. Whether tis nobler to try and keep up this Shakespeare sham or shut up and get on with the question. I'm planning on rebuilding my web pages from the ground up. I'm planning on having several different large sections accessable from the home page, each covering different subjects. Examples of the sections are:all my poetry grouped together, personal information, conservation and environment issues blah blah blah  On pages like this, would you prefer frames with links back to the main page and the top page of each section in the small frame, or uhmmm *shrug* not  Thanks a lot, Colin. Frames are evil. There have been very few sites which I think were served better for having frames. Very few, and those had incredibly large amounts of diverse information. Frames are evil. |

The only reason to ever use frames are if you have a lot of pages and are going to be updating the navigation on it rather reguarly. Just keeps update time down. Otherwise, frames are eviiiiillll!!!!!!! "Sa souvraya niende missian ye." \ I am lost in my own mind. |

I think frames are fine, if used in the right place and for the right reason. I use a frames based page to keep all my favorite URL’s and notes together, it consists of a static left hand frame that holds the main heading links and a main body (scrollable) that I load the linked pages into. It takes seconds to update and I get all my links and notes in one convenient place. I also have at least a dozen pages on the company Intranet that have a fixed frame header and left hand links frame and a main body that is updated and supplied by various members of staff. All they need to do is type out the required content in Word and save it as HTML, the output can be saved onto the server and updates only the main body. What this means is that we have a company of web page producers, anyone who can use Word can contribute to the Intranet without learning HTML or WYSIWYG editors but I still have control over the general look and navigational controls. That being said it has to be understood that I also have control over the browsers that all Intranet users use to access the site, even down to the version loaded and there, as they say, is the rub. Different browsers and different versions of different browsers can do funny things to frame pages, that’s where the notion that they’re ‘evil’ generally springs from. I prefer to think of them in the same way as say leeches – they can be nasty little things but still have some medicinal redeeming features. |

Frames are crappy. They create havoc when you try to build a dynamic website. So to frames I just have to say.... PFTFTFTFTFT! :P -- "Luck affects everything. ok, thanks muchly people That pretty much goes along with what I was thinking. The reason I asked was that frames seem to be appearing more and more. I was wondering if this was a reflection of the average surfer's tastes or just because people were trying to show that they could do something almost clever  so, no frames it is. I agree with Craig; frames do have a place in this world. In fact, I access these forums through a frameset, with the links I need to the left and the forum pages on the right. But the place for frames is almost always one where you know you'll have limited visitors, usually just yourself or a few members of your company/family. Why? Well, for one, there are very few search engines able to index a framed web site (there are important exceptions to this, better discussed in the Promotion forum). So a lot of visitors probably won't even find you. And if they do, they are going to have trouble bookmarking anything except the frameset. So, if they find a really good reference three levels deep into your site, they have to just remember how to get to it the next time they need it. Frames are very hostile towards repeat visitors. |

Thanks Ron, those are two very good reasons not to have frames! I had an inkling that it might be a problem with search engines but wasn't really too sure. Also, thinking about it, yes, repeat visits to a frame site can be a total nightmare when you're trying to find that one page of interest you spent all last night looking for. One of these days, I may even get enough time to do something about my new webpage! Thanks for the help everyone, Colin.
