THE PUPPET SHOW

Copyright 2001 by: Mark V Sheldon

The stage is set.
The people wait.
The house lights dim.
The wooden representatives motion one another.

The red curtain
rustles behind them
but reveals nothing
behind the scenes.

The show begins.

Their mouths move up and down
like their eyelids batting, average
in appearance, lips purse, strings
pull at our hearts and pocket
US
with popcorn serenades and pieces
of big apple pie.

Their mouths move with Nutcracker finesse
except for that one
in the spotlight.
A string must have snapped from the tension –
his smile is crooked.

Do you see the other one, there
in the shadows?
He keeps moving just out of sight.
He hasn’t spoken in a while,
but it sounds like he’s in the spotlight.

Where do the voices come from?
Ignore the man behind the curtain.
What man?

Exactly.

This show reminds me
of one I saw
ten years ago.
The characters are familiar, and
the plot is the same.

But I can’t remember the ending...

I for one (and not the only one!), am pleased that you reposted this poem--not only because it is appropriate for the times, but because it afforded me the opportunity of reading it this time around!

Peace & Light,
EA

This has always been one of my favorites from you, dear Mark. BTW, I am still looking for scissors.

(big hugggssssssss) Just way too much fantoccini and ventriloquism in today's world, dearest friend, I think Bush and Blair lost their stiff upper lip somewhere in the chest from whence they came prior to this show, here's hoping we can embrace the world with no strings attached, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Mark, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

ah.. a worthy repost... enjoyed this and the things it says...

oh those strings... and how the voices indeed are at time so out of sync with the words...

Brad Majors:  as long as it makes you think...

Earth Angel, thank you for the read and thoughts.

Pat, I'm glad you enjoyed.  But now the puppet show is no longer suitable for children...

passing shadows, you're welcome and appreciation to you for the read.

Kacy, we're gonna need more than scissors...

Noah, the strings have started to strangle...

Ron, the only "sync" lately is the feeling I get inside...  I think it's a good time for Gort...

seems the puppetmaster's been busy, more strings have been tied...as the masses become the entertainment.

Live like it's your last day...
Dance like nobody's watching...
Love like you've never been hurt...
