Listening to every heart

Abby’s Vigil

She greets all as Sundog, warily, waiting, wanting
To be guardian, giving of herself unconditionally for a
Bit of food, water,
A hand to the head, in acknowledgement
Of a good job, well done…

She will eye the season in change, count leaves
As they burst toward green, study grass
As it pushes forth, greet the mailman as he walks
On by…

She will age as children do, only more rapidly,
Watching her children as they come to and from school,
Her tailing wagging the rest of her
When they return home…now with their children…

She’ll guard her neighbors and their visitors,
Vocalizing quiet growls of unconventional happenings,
Then let the squirrels squirrel their food back up
From winter’s retreat, knowing “here is the window,
And I cannot chase you…”

She thinks many things, we are sure, because her
Eyes miss nothing, her ears hear all, quietly reminding us
Listen to songbirds,
Watch suns rise,
Giggle at squirrel’s antics,
Feed the rabbits,
Hold me close,
I am only here
For a little while.

Oh this is so sweet and so true.
Our pet friends ask so little of us..
yet can teach us so very much.
Love this...and the pics!

Now how can I decide whether I enjoyed your words more or your photography?  You give me just a quandry.  I guess I'll view it as two scoops of ice cream!!  There isn't quite anything like the unquestioning love of an animal.  KJ

Hold me close,
I am only here
For a little while.

Karilea - how true and how tender of a write. I still miss my dear, old Doberman pal, who used to join me in greeting our spring flower garden. Pets give us unconditional love. Is Abby a Westie? If so, this is amazing as we are waiting for word of a new litter of Westies.....we just might be proud new owners!! thankyou for this, hugs, Chris

Karilea, thank you so much for this.
I love my little Scooter so much and
am getting attached to him more every day
He was only a year old in December. I never
thought I would be this attached to a pet,
though I've always loved animals.

Oh, I just gave Scooter some extra hugs.

A delightful and true poem, with lots
of "Sunshine" in it.....

Heart Hugs,
Ethel

Karilea...my little Precious is lying by my feet in the sunshine...perhaps she is basking in the glow of its poetry.
