The bedroom was dark,
it’s two small windows facing west,
soft and silent against the dawn.

‘We got snow’, she whispered, ‘lots of it’.

Pretending not to hear,
breathing…
in the same
shallow, even rhythm,
not yet ready
to open the day,
knowing she’d be back
with coffee and such,
I slept
another moment

only to dream of you

while she built birdhouses
from popsicle sticks
and thought of some other reason
to wake me.

Waking dreams give you double the pleasure--you get to enjoy them on two differnt levels of consciousness!

Ha! My ex-husband's next wife (in line) built bird houses with popsicle sticks.  Tsk! Wonder what he was dreaming...oops, not nice, grinning here....

Great poem! Enjoyed... Pat

Duncan, the melancholy flows
wonderfully here. Love it!

It reminds me of one of my own.
I amy dig it out and dust it off.

Thanks for the great read!

AHEM! Jiminy needs to have a talk with you. Not that it will do any good.
Besides, Jiminy has been found within that same moment, more than once.
I always built beautiful birdhomes from popsicle sticks, but the birds never seemed to stick around no matter how nice the home was designed!
