“Poetic” she said to me after she found me on the White a half empty bottle of Ezra, shell casings, and glass strewn on the spit of sand pure testament to the story I had told her. “Well, guess you better clean this mess up.” “You aren’t walking off and leaving it this way.” Between the heat and my now pounding head Cleaning up was painful, But she was right Again She fed me bacon and eggs soft with toast Strong coffee and a small helping of advice. “Son,” she said, her wizened face in a half wrinkled smile “You were trespassing on my land, and I don’t much care for that.” “I care even less for damned fools who go around shooting guns.” I nodded, watching her watch me Then get up out of her chair and carry My empty plate to the sink and rinse it. “You fools that think you are cowboys or something.” She almost spat the words with a shake of head telling me I wasn’t the first she had talked to Or corralled after drinking too much And blowing off steam. “I’m going to give you a bit of advice,” she continued with her back to me busily washing out the skillet. “First, if you want to come down to the river here, you stop at the house and ask.” “Second, get over yourself boy, Life’s got a way of handing us enough ugly to deal with, without us stirring up all sorts of ugly in the mud we all got at the bottom of our minds.” All I could do was mumble Yes maams and try not to meet her eyes That had sparked like flint When she was scolding. Dishes done, she dried her hands On a feed sack towel Then stuck it out at me, “I’m Mrs. Slater,” “you feel that stupid again, you come see me.” “Yes Maam.” “Now, get on out of here.” She chuckled. She must have been 70 But I knew when a woman like that told you to git Best be gitting Or she’d have you cleaning out the barn Or driving fence posts Just to watch you sweat. ........................................ Silent by Ezra Pound When I behold how black, immortal ink Drips from my deathless pen- ah, well-away! Why should we stop at all for what I think? There is enough in what I chance to say. Is it enough that we once came together; What is the use of setting it to rhyme? When it is autum do we get spring weather, Or gather many of harsh northwindish time? It is enough that we once came together; What is the wind have turned against the rain? It is enough that we once came together; Time has seen this, and will not turn again. And who are we, who know that last intent, To plague tomorrow with a testament! Author: Ezra Pound [This message has been edited by Cpat Hair (03-07-2003 09:40 AM).] |

“You fools that think you are cowboys or something.” She almost spat the words with a shake of head telling me I wasn’t the first she had talked to Or corralled after drinking too much And blowing off steam. Enjoyed the appearance of Mrs. Slater in this telling Ron. Got a real feeling for the character in her dealings with Travis. Love the fact that she made him clean up his own mess, hangover and all. Let's hope he's smart enough to heed her advice... ![]() |

We all have a Mrs. Slater in our past...and you wrote of her so that we could see her...loved the little touches like the sack towel and the flint sparking eyes...very very cool. There was much wisdom found between the lines of this... Thank you for sharing the Ezra Pound (which I had never read) its premise brought an ironic smile to me mothy face...yes timing is everything--you will understand when you see my next post...( assuming I ever finish it) could be time to grow a beard. ![]() |

Sighing here...this was worth the wait. I too, enjoyed the introduction of new character....tripped my memory...I had someone like that once, but who? Perhaps we all have. I liked this: "without us stirring up all sorts of ugly in the mud we all got at the bottom of our minds." And including the Ezra Pound Poem... some fabulous poetry! wow! Enjoyed greatly, Pat ![]() ..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.. |
