You have to view it in something...so which is it? What's your favorite browser? Why? I've used Netscape and Internet Explorer, and IE is by FAR my first (only if possible!) choice. |

IE is the one that I most commonly use. HOWEVER!!! I keep NS on hand all the time, because although it needs special pampering to run half the scripts that are out there, it's still a little more stable than IE. I've been finding that IE's been freezing often on my computer. So, as far as a good all around browser is concerned, I use IE. But if I don't want to freeze for a while, I'll use NS. |

IE no doubt. But there is some code that works on NS that won't work on IE. Like for instance... HTML code will work on NS and not on IE. So if the above blink is not blinking, you see what I mean? hehehe |

Good point Dovie! The blink tag most certainly does not work in IE. Too, if you go into the scripting languages - there are a lot of those that don't work with Netscape. For work, I wrote a really really simple little JavaScript to pop open a window containing a larger image of the thumbnail that the person just clicked on. It doesn't work in Netscape. *sigh* I have noticed, like fractal said, that NS can be more reliable - but I've noticed, with that comes hinderance. It's slower. It's subjective really; browser choice depends on what you personally choose to view. And when you're designing a web site (diving into another forum, here), both browsers have to be taken into consideration. What will your audience most likely be using? What looks GREAT in NS may look yucky-pooey in IE, and vice-versa. |

Being old has its advantages. I can't personally think of any, but that's what I've been told. Unfortunately, it also has its disadvantages. When I got on the web, circa 1996, IE was little more than a gleam in Billie's eye and Netscape was the only choice we had. I got used to it. VERY used to it. So used to it that I can't stand using another browser for very long. I am, however, trying real hard. Netscape now accounts for only about 20 percent of the Internet, and that number is only going to continue going down. The result is that "some" people are no longer even trying to maintain compatibility with it. For the past few weeks, I've started keeping IE open at all times, because one of the sites I frequent will lock up Netscape four times out of five (it's actually their ad server that does, but that doesn't help me much). So, when I go to that site, I temporarily switch. Here's two things that I really hate about IE (and maybe someone can tell me how to fix them). First, I hate the way a page "jiggles" as IE constantly resizes images and tables. A lot of UBB forums don't have page numbers in the forum display, for example, but they do have them at the TOP of a page. On a multipage thread I'll click on the thread link, then click on the last page link before the first page completely loads. Except that's really hard to do when IE moves the darn link every time my mouse pointer gets close to it! I also hate the way IE opens secondary browser windows. When I right-click a link and do an "Open in New Window," I want the new window to duplicate the one I'm in, not come in with a different size and position. I work full screen, I LIKE working full screen, and IE doesn't seem to be willing to respect that. So, after a right-click, click, I then have to quickly double-click the new window's title bar to open it full screen (and, of course, that completely reloads the page). Grrrr. Now I'm mad all over again.  |

LOL Ron - right when you said "jiggle" I knew exactly what you were talking about, and I haven't been able to figure out a way around it yet. I'm way too impatient - "speedy delivery" - I'll click inside a form box before the page has loaded, only to look back and see that my cursor is floating somewhere totally off in the middle of the page. *grr* Although NS isn't my browser of choice, I really do think that it's too bad companies are 'phasing it out'. It's almost like because so many people don't use it anymore, they've just stopped trying to keep up with the internet times. (if that makes any sense) I was reading in some tech-geek magazine, that I can't remember the tile of, a while back - and they were talking about Linux. Apparently (I'm new to Linux, just started a class on it a little over a month ago) because Linux can be such a great OS, provided you can program it the way you want it, there are some companies that are thinking about embedding the OS straight on the processor. NS, as far as I know, is the only browser compatible with Linux. I could go on a tirade about Microsoft in general, but I won't. LOL Blood-pressure and all that. |

I frankly wish that they would just make one browser for the internet. I hate the incompatabilities between IE and NS. They are really hindering me when it comes to my learning DHTML. I have to always write a stupid global javascript file so that NS will know what I'm talking about when I do my things. THey should really give up on the stupid browser war, and merge the two browsers. That would make it so that webpages don't need all those darned global files in order to work right. |

It sucks, but the alternative sucks more. Unfortunately, the trend suggests we're getting the worst of both: incompatibilities and the death of competition. FWIW, Netscape 6 (which was NOT written by Netscape) is one hundred percent compliant with the latest committee standards. And half the sites on the Internet (including the page at /) won't work with it. Ain't life grand?  </font> |

Ron: LOL, who the heck's on this committee, if it doesn't recognize the stuff on Piptalk.com??? Well, then I wish that they would make both browsers compliant with each other. I mean, in my humble opinion, NS is being phased because it won't recognize the code for the most popular browsers. Why don't they just get it to recognize it? Wouldn't that sorta boost people's downloading it? |

Wasn't NS 6 written by AOL? Almost all the techs I know, consider AOL 6.0 to be a virus.  I tend to agree, from what I've heard.Thank you for the links, Ron. Like I said, I'm new - and those sites help. My teacher (the first one I've ever had a problem with) shouldn't be teaching that class. He has yet to tell us how to successfully mount and unmount a drive, much less install something as simple as a plug-in. Needless to say, he was the source of the "Netscape only" information. |

I've used Netscape, IE, and also an odd browser known as Neoplanet. Neoplanet is just a more graphical version of IE, think IE with full GUI skins like Winamp. I believe IE to be the best browser. IE has rarely crashed on my computer, and I've had it for two years now. Versions 5. and 5.5 with features like autocomplete. It's quick and it doesn't seem to take up as much resources as Netscape.. having 4 or 5 browsers open doesn't seem to phase my system at all... Netscape just seems clunky and flamboyant, I like straight and simple IE.. In my opinion the best browser is Opera. Netscape is far to buggy for my use, and IE is to... much. Both have additional stuff that is not in the standards. Opera follows the standards all the way. (Fanfare!) To develop html-pages you should always try to make pages that is browser independent. Testing your pages in opera ensures that your page will show well in all browsers. Opera is found at www.opera.com. Last version is 5.0 and is freeware. (With ad-thingie). Geir the webdesign-addict. -- "Luck affects everything.
