Since I put in the new ad agency a few days ago, we've been averaging about $5.50 a day. That includes the forums, the Digital Passion site, and 100-Poems.com (the main site will be changed within the next few days to an agency that is more aggressive than we have in here, but substantially less aggressive than what has been on netpoets.com in the past). No, LR, $5.50 a day doesn't exactly go a long way. But even a little way, especially when the inconvenience is being shared by everyone, is better than nothing.

There should be no popups. So, yea, I guess you do need so say more.

Yesterday morning, in the forums, I was prompted to download a spy-ware program. Angered, I logged into the ad agency, ready to cut off the offending advertiser at the knees. Unfortunately, I had already closed the prompt window and could find no ad that looked like what I had seen. Had I been less precipitous, I might have had better luck. I'm learning that when an advertiser breaks the rules I've imposed on them, they don't make it obvious. They try to hide.

So any information someone can give me on any popup would help me track down who is doing it. In Internet Explorer, if you right-click on the popup screen and call up the Properties, it should include an URL. That, and any text or company names from the ad itself, will help me get them turned off.

Another one I got was an AT&T Wireless one.  Strangely enough the word "Wireless" was spelled "Wirelss" in the title box, and clicking on the link only brought me to a 404.  The popup is a flash page so I can't figure out how to find its source, right-clicking only brings me flash options.

No Ron -- no complaints about banners -- just the pop-ups.  And this one
http://akqa.com/

I got everytime I opened a thread yesterday, only once today.

I haven't been prompted to download anything yet though.

Ron, I have a lot of links to art sites that allow you to use thier artwork which many of us do here and also it would give the site a commission of sales to help it along its way . . . I dont know if that is what your seeking or why this is the po- ups your getting, but I have used them in the past and they are respectable, beautiful artwork with no - pop- ups . . .
they onyl require some sort of link to their site so we can access it easily

This is a little frustrating, because NONE of those companies are listed as advertising with us. Makes it a little hard to disable them.

Nonetheless, I've made a few changes to see if I can curb their enthusiasm. Let me know if anyone sees more popups, please.

Sue, I'm afraid I'm not following you? Are you talking about an affiliate site? I usually try to work only with advertising networks to avoid all the hassles. They take most of the revenue, but do ALL of the work. When this starts looking too much like a business to me, I'm outta here. Been there, done that. At this point in my life, I much prefer simplicity over greed.

By refreshing over and over and watching the banners rotate I was able to get some interesting results.

The http://www.akqa.com/ pops up with the banner that says 'verified by visa' which is a flash ad -- i haven't been able to identify it's url.

A banner that tried to open, but cleverly never did -- it just hung white forever but displayed this at the bottom of the browser as it tried to load "http://http.edge.vru4.com/smartserve/html?placement=pl-burstdsl-01&"

popped up http://ad1.zendmedia.com/ad-kp.php?id=ad40

which when closed popped up http://www.bestofonline.com/

which opened up http://www.bestofonline.com/adpop1.htm

which was a prompt to download software to stop these annoying popups

which took me to here http://ad1.zendmedia.com/ad35/

when clicked

I wound up with 18 dataminers on my hard drive during the process...

hope it helps Ron

Just a quick question about these popups... how come I never seem to get them? Not that I'm complaining, but the only time I get a popup when I'm on Passions is when I get to the login page, and even then I don't get it every time. It's something about a telephone company, I think, but I usually close it before it finishes loading. I've never gotten any more than that one, and other people seem to have problems with them popping up all the time.

Just curious.

LR, your reference to the banner from Visa sort of confused me. That's a pretty darn reputable company to be engaged in this sort of stuff. Then it occurred to me: I've seen that banner several times and I do NOT have Flash installed on this computer.

That was the clue that started me investigating the ads I haven't seen, because I don't have Flash, and sure enough, I found the dastardly culprit. It's not only been disabled, but according to the ad agency when I reported them, will be kicked out of the network for changing the behavior of their ad after it was accepted.

So, looks like your investigative work paid off. Too bad it cost both of us so much time, though.

Let me know, everyone, should another popup appear?

Thanks for the work Ron!

Unfortunately -- I'm still getting popped.  I thought it might be because the flash movie was still in my cache but after cleaning it out I still get the akqa when I open a thread and get the verified by visa banner....

what does seem to be different now is that when I click on the banner nothing happens -- which, before just replayed the movie and opened the akqa all over again...

I keep trying to understand why people think we're going to buy their product if they hijack our browsers/ call us during dinner -- can't for the life of me figure out who goes for that.

Anyone else seeing this?

LR, you might want to check the links I gave in this thread to see if you've been infected by Spyware. I see the Visa ad all over the place here, with no ill effects, but it could be the ad is triggering eZula or Gator on your machine to display the popup. You can read about how it works and automatically be scanned for a few of the most common programs at http://scumware.com

Should have picked those up with the 18 dataminers I found Ron -- but, anything is possible -- I'll scan around later this evening.  Thanks.

Nope, clean as a whistle Ron.

But, I also notice this evening that the Visa banner seems to be out of rotation as I have been trying to pick it up and can't.

Noticed that at least one banner red x's so I assume you have it blocked.

Good job!  Thanks

I've never had any pop ups when I'm on Piptalk.
