So tempting to just pick and choose according to personal favorites, but of course, it's a business and there's a lot of other considerations that might not be fulfilled by our personal tastes. Consider your budget. ALWAYS. What's the rental on the arena? Consider each bands requirements. Travel expenses, lodging? food? Read their contracts with a fine tooth comb under a magnifying glass... Try to streamline the budget by knowing their tour schedules. Anybody available near by with dates to fill? Know if they have promotional requirements...since it's charity you should have lots of free air time on local radio, television, (check local newcast programs) as well as newspaper. You could have a bargaining chip if you can assure sales--but be careful with that--if you don't meet the projection you can have serious headaches on your hands. How much of a crew will you need, keeping in mind enough security to meet local fire & safety laws. And, of course, be sure that you can meet the projections needed to ensure you have your standards met for tax and federal laws to ensure your charity status. Lotsa questions to be asked here...but the fun part? smile..I'd have to go with my top three being--not necessarily in order, Dokken, Dio, and Kansas (excellent sound systems for all three, but be aware if it's outdoors? Kansas really hates to have to bend to local noise ordinances, but oh what a show...) Have fun, and let me know how it turns out. sigh..for a few minutes it seemed like old times...grin. |

Sunshine- TY Serenity- I kow all to well the hassles of doing this. My last one fell through at the last minute, because I had a handshake with the venue, and completely forgot to put it on paper. The ones I chose are all redily availble at minimal cost to the sponsors ( I'm not buying them The loca radio station and the local TV are each taking one.) and the venue is sponsoring the show itself. My company is not even making any profit... only coving most costs. Thanks for the input. I got a chance to travel with Kansas as part of their USO tour's road crew (I was in the Marines) and they threw a GREAT show every night. I am leaning towards Dio and Kansas. Thanks When the morning cries and you don't know why... |

Sorry Ringo... I was the keeper of details once upon a time, and no, I WAS NOT fun to work for--until the job was done. Thanks for posting this, it seemed like fun for a few minutes, but? I spent the evening thinking about the hassles vs. rewards? Don't think I'm going back down that avenue again. So thanks for reminding me. It's easy to forget. Much luck to you. |

Going to school in Topeka in the 70's, I'm a bit partial to Kansas also. The Red Dog Inn over in Lawrence at KU was a great way to spend a Saturday night. Yeppers, and to top it off, Dave Hope's dad was one of the first judges I ever practiced in front of and a heck of guy. I personally think the judicial influence on the band was the basis for their creative talents. |

Brad: Are you referring to only one band? If so , yes Kansas def. If not - consider the crowd that will be present - do they want to hear Dio or Cinderella ( I would but . . .) Are they an older crowd - younger? I would go in-between and choose neutral bands like: April Wine, Kansas , Nazareth, Eddie Money. Of course - if it is a teen thing - or mid adult then def go for: Dio, Dokken, Molly Hatchet . . . Think of the audience - think of who will pay for this - who will be attending - what will draw the crowd you will be serving? Did a HUGE benefit like this once - my crowd was mostly Irish - so the music was easy . . . wanted Ozzy but geez couldnt see him with bagpipes lol Let me know if you have any other questions - been there - was a real pain in the . . . (edited by moderator) ok I put that there myself. Seriously, did the tickets, flyers, food, band, hall, auctions, raffles, split-club, alcohol, and all the donated prizes - baskets and items for the auctions to generate more money for the cause. Hope this helped. |

WIZARD OF OZ THEME????????????????? Remind me never to talk to you again. Although it is an interesting thought, I don't know if I can get ahold of Toto right now... although I could look...and to make it a TRUE Wiz of Oz... I would have to add THE one true wizard of ozz (or was that BLIZZARD of Ozz??) Thanks for the input everyone. Right now, the only hassle I am having is getting the venue. I have both of the major venues in the area that I have the credibility and the backing to book (can't right now do the 5,000 seat college arena). I have the inside on a club that has recently closed to musical productions and could more than likely get them to re-open for ONE show, however, I think I'm gonna go outside with this. I think the final lineup is going to be Firehouse and the Killer Dwarfs, with my band and one other local opening the show. When the morning cries and you don't know why... |

Hey, I'll come and entertain for FREE! NOW, go and ROTFL at that image. All kidding side, Molly Hatchet is still performing? I didn't know that. Well, if it were me, I think I'd do a quick poll at the local high schools and get some feedback, if that's the intended target ie paying audience. Or just go with Kansas for a fairly 'safe' bet the crowds will show. Don't listen to me though, I've only been a concert attendee never a promoter. |

yes, Molly Hatchet are still together... sort of. There are no original members left, and only one of the "second-tier" members left. They play with two guitars instead of three. Their last album that I remember was about a year and a half ago when I opened for them. They played a song called Corn Bread mafia that absolutely rocked!!!! LOL, then how come they (MH)still go by the same name? I find that a bit bizarre if NO original members are in the group. Oh well, it's not by job to second guess, I guess, just to listen and buy if I like it. |
