I was watching t.v. the other day, not something i pride myself in doing, and i saw a commercial for a new video game.  the game was called desert storm, and the point is to go to iraq kill iraqi soldiers and find saddam.  at first i thought it was a joke, someone poking fun at our imperialist government and it's power hungry, blood thirsty leaders.  when i found out it wasn't i was so mad.  they are blatently commercializing off of our nation's present conflict, and then calling it something else.  i am trying very hard to hold onto the tiny bit of hope i have left for our society and our country, while the coorperate whores make millions by selling violence, hate, and death to our desensitized youth.

just like with drugs or anything else, there has to be a market in order for the "corporate whores" to support a product. it's not the government, it's not the corporations, it's the people they're serving.

I saw that Video Game as well. Like you, I first thought it was a joke.  I think a game like that is the last thing we need right now.  Desert Storm was anything but fun and games.

this is not surprising considering the until now widespread popularity and adult acceptance of "Grand Theft Auto" being marketed as a children's game.

it involves being a car theif, killing for profit, learning how to rise in organized crime outfits, and I heard the latest one lets you interface with prostitutes, and pimps. (the previous one had strippers, but as far as I am concerned that's just a living).

i feel it speak more to what society will tolerate than what a corporation will sell. remember, they should not be expected to be moral and just - their goal is profit, nothing else. it is we who ought to care enough to boycott such [edited by moderator].

In England Grand Theft Auto was classfied as a Mature, stating that it had blood and violence in, meaning only those that were over 18 could buy it. A very responisble descision by the publishers who were to some extent self regulatory. GTA has not been marketed as a childrens game over here but in it's first and second incarnations (I have no idea about the third) the game had a comic book look. Now it's better that it did have this as it breaks the boundaries between what is real and what is not real.

This game reflects society, there are such things as prostitutes so why should they not be included? As for your comment about strippers I fail to see how you can distinguish between the two, both are "livings" as you put it, maybe one is a little seedier and we would like to pretend that it didn't happen but the truth is that it does and the people who are prostitutes more often than not want to escape that life, but this is all irrelevant when you realise that GTA 3 has a Mature sticker telling the potential buyer of it's content. If it is good enough to put that on Videos and Movies then it must be good enough for
video games which are a lot realistic and a lot less graphic.

The problem is not video games it is society, if there were no guns and no prostitutes there would be very little content to put in to GTA, both guns and prostitutes were around before GTA and will be around long after is forgotten, there are greater social issues here than video game violence and as a society it should be our moral duty to fix the underlying problems such as poverty because at the end of the day very few people are in the state of mind where they want to commit crime, it is so much more to do with the fact they have to do it to survive.

The greatest evil is to say that the corporations should not sell these games, GTA has repeatedly proven that there is a market for these sort of games, Why? because they represent something that most people would rather experience within the comfort of their own home and without any of the real consequences.

I believe the greater crusade for the American society is to get rid of the culture of gun ownership because it is guns that kill no matter what people say, if you remove the ease of access to these weapons there has to be less gun crime.

I may be wrong, but isn't this the game that the US army supports as a recruiting tool?

Um...there could be better game for that.

And secondly---I don't think the Army would use a videogame for a recruiting tool. Like honestly, do they sit there with a clipboard and say, "Well...he can run from the cops, endure hundreds of bullets, and steal 20 cars in 15 minutes; all of which has NO applocation to real life" Quite honestly, that sounds like something a TreeHouse club would do. Lol, and in my opinion---there ARE better games for the job! MORE realistic ones...ones MORE suited for military issues, and not street thugs.

And it being so early in the morning, I only had the kahoonies to skim through what Zu said. (I'll full read when I'm more awake) But with what I saw...I agree. Up here in Canada, it's rated M. (Meaning, you need a photo ID to by it) And along with the "M" label---it has VARIOUS warnings (ie- language, violence, suggestive themes) Now...being a good parent, and bying your child that game...how could you NOT see that warning?!

GTA3 features alot more realistic scenarios than the previous two. I find that it's not desensitzing children...it's opening their eyes to the wonderful world they live in! It'd the PARENT'S resposibility (Y'know...JUST IN CASE you STILL went ahead and bought your special little darlings that game with VARIOUS warnings on it) to sit the child down and say, "Yes, these things DO happen...but you're not invincible and can go around shooting people for the fun of it!" (Like, come'on...what-else are you supposed to do...you've already gotten that far---right?)

And for all those angry at Desert Storm...what the heck do you think the US is doing? You're mad at this...now? It's what people want to see...thus, entertainers make it! When you're sitting there, feeling your pride being blown to peices by this game...some guy on the other side of the city, playing that game; getting a sense that he's serving this country! Don't ask me how...but THAT's entertainment. (Lol, and if Saddam heard about that game...couldn't he sue?)

And any gamer out there---would know that games normally based on actual events are usually VERY linear and restrictive. When *I* play a videogame...that's NOT what I look for! Even if I'm looking for a first-person situation (op, sorry...murder-simulator) the LAST thing I'd go to is a military game...ONTOP of that, it wouldn't be a game based on current affairs.

I'm grown up enough, to KNOW that whatever I see and learn in videogames is um---not real! It's not the games, it's the people. Some aren't ready for that sort of thing...and yet they're mindlessly exposed to it anyways. They're not ready for the real world.

Heh---don't ask me how...but I wish videogames were MORE realistic. (Although GTA can be fun...it's not my cup-o-tea) *thinks* Now thinking about it...a videogame can be used to teach people things, so yeah...I can see it being used to TRAIN military recruits...but not recruit them.

I'll probably get more down when I read the rest of the posts...

Desert Storm has been out for years, originally for the Sega Genesis back in the early '90s. This is an ongoing series of games.

It's all been said, many times before.

Conflict: Desert Storm is a new game that has swept the states and has gone to number 1 on all formats. It's been in production for over 18 months so it's not as though they just put it together when Bush decided he would restart the Gulf War again.

I assume that is what this discussion is about.

Brad, I'm 99% sure that the game you're thinking of is "America's Army", a free downloadable game supported by...shockingly enough..the American Army. No surprise, it can be downloaded from the Army website. Haven't played the game myself, but I've heard it's a first person shooter, such as Counterstrike, Half-life, Doom, Quake, and any of a thousand other games that fit the genre.
