I don't know what to do. We have a new employee (been here three months). She told another person in my department that she goes through my desk when I'm not there. The girl next to my cubicle has heard her opening my file cabinet.

I don't feel comfortable talking to our supervisor - that's sort of tattling...and I am VERY uncomfortable confronting her...sigh.

Oh boy!  No one likes confrontations but sometimes they are necessary and this inmy opinion is one of those times.  What this employee is doing is a total invasion of your privacy Sharon, and also how do you know that you are the only one she is doing this too?  What do you thing are her intentions, and if it is to snoop, that is still a violation, but if it is to pilfer things, that is theft.  I am afraid I would confront her and forewarn her that you are obligated by your contract with your employers to report her, and that is not tattling; it is being loyal to your employer (who pays you).  The person going through your desk can be replaced in a heartbeat and should, if they are looking in your desk drawers.  That is just my opinion, and I sure hope you sort this out, that is terrible.

There is nothing means more to me than
my faith, my family and my friends.

Sharon? with all due love and respect? KILL HER!!!

with kindness....smile...?

you know me? I'd corner her...in the nicest possible way of course. And then I would hit her with the softest possible sledge hammer!!
;

If you choose to take the less intrusive track, then you have the option of simply covering your arse and eating the stress of all of that. You have two choices. You can act. Or react. but? you MUST do something. It's indecision that kills you.

What's keeping you from going to her and asking her what it was she needed?  A file?  Some office staples?  Help her look for those items, let her know YOU know she was in your desk that way.  You might also tell her to leave you a note on your desk the next time she "needs" something, that way when you return, you can find it for her

True fact - If you do nothing, it'll eat away at you.  You have to take action of some kind...

An important question is - WHY? - Is there a valid reason (not that I can think of any) for her to have been going into your cabinet?  Also, why would she be relating this incident (these incidences?) to others?  That's odd, isn't it?

If there was a valid reason, I'd still confront her - She could have told you as soon as she saw you.

If there was no valid reason, she really needs to face you with her rationalizations.  Look at it this way - She should be LOTS more uncomfortable about discussing this than you are... don'tcha think?

Confrontations needn't always be confrontational. Here's two possible ways to handle it that might work.

Tell her you want to thank her if she's the one that left the big bag of M&M's in your desk drawer. You heard she was being sneaky and now you understand why. This is a bit iffy, both because it might be seen as condoning her actions and, frankly, because it's not entirely honest. The idea, though, is to let her know you know without it being an accusation.

Here's what I would probably do. Leave her a note. In your desk drawer. Put her name across it in big, bold lettering and then have a little fun with the message. Maybe a four line poem? Something to the effect - "If you're reading this right now, your name BETTER be Sharon!" Then, every time you see her for the next week, give her your best "knowing smile."

Ron said what I was going to. Leave a note addressed to her in your drawer. She'll know she's busted and hopefully she will back off. And by all means leave it in poem form lol!

take it from a bugman...small mousetraps in drawers can work wonders. Even if you are not lucky enough to catch her finger, the trap will go off and she will know you will know someone was there, unless she wants to reset the trap, which few women do. Also it might make her think you may have mice in your drawers, always a worthwhile deterrent

I have mouse balls in my drawer - does that count?

(You know, the little roller ball that gets dirty every few months so your mouse won't work smoothly. But then, you knew exactly what I meant, right?)

Possibly you've never had a woman in your drawers, either. Drastic times call for drastic measures!!!

I don't know what DeVine wants..doesn't want mouseballs or mousetraps and yet she won't rat on her..would you call her mousy?

Rons suggestion is what I was going to say...and its dead on....I had to do the same thing in a very similar situation...

I left my nosey neighbor a simple note...

"Smile ... youre on Candid Camera"

she literally tripped over a chair hauling butt out of the room..and never plundered my space again.

So, DeVine one, which course of action did you settle on?

Well....I was very sneaky. I put a folded piece of paper in my top drawer. It was folded so all you saw was the name of my supervisor and "There's something you should know about the new girl".....

then when it's unfolded, it reads "she's really catching on. She's going to be a great asset to the team and I trust her enough to let her work more on her own. I'm so glad you hired her!"

Now we'll just sit back and see what happens.....
