Ok..I'm taking this subject to the Alley! I work 8 hours a day. I have a life (albeit small) and would like to spend some of my time reading poetry on this site. It's impossible to read EVERYTHING that is posted! Unfortunately, if someone responds to one of my poems, I tend to read theirs in return - it's only human nature as I feel I'm returning the favor! It's great that the forum is getting so much attention, but how can I keep up? Nan's posting about the 'newbies' reading and posting a reply is a good one. Perhaps I'll limit my postings as well. I'll still read and reply and bring some of the 'older' stuff from the beginning of the forum, but will ration my poetry (except on the Adult Forum, which could use some poetry!) Thanks to Nan for bringing up the subject! |

I know what you mean. I work the same hours, although at night (talk about a hard way for a morning person...but I digress). I really enjoy reading all that I can, but it is hard to keep up. Last night I logged in briefly...new posts and new responses took up 2 screens!!! WOW!!! Every time I log in I can't help but notice how large this community is, and how it keeps growing. My muse does visit, but doesn't stay long, although she has promised me that I can page her at will...I'll just have to see how that goes. But my posts will be limited, so that I can better appreciate the other poets without blanketing them with my ramblings. I hope to see some more of your material in Adult, as it usually trips a mental breaker, and sometimes a rib. Alicat |

Maybe we need to grab the new poets when they first post and tell them to tone it down...or if there's a way to do a vote on this? Maybe a secret ballot? I'll ask Ron....... |

I'm not sure.... sounds to Clintonesque to me. Regulating something that should be a personal responsibility and common courtesy. Perhaps just an advertisement to new people accessing the site to be courteous and limit thier posts and provide extensive responses to existing poems. Sorry, I just dislike a lot of rules and restrictions (except that I spent two hours this morning reading new stuff and hardly the time to comment on anything because of it....) ------------------ Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn. I think I saw this somewhere else, but it struck me as a wonderful idea. Maybe a new sections just for "newbies" I was as guilty as anyone, posting as much as I could ina short period of time. It wasn't that I was trying to over-run anyone else, it was simply that I worried that no one was reading me. It gets dropped down incredibly fast. So maybe if we present another outlet for those just getting started, it will make things a little easier to sort out until they can get the idea (took me a while) ------------------ Sanity is the playground for the unimaginative. |

Not sure another forum would solve the problem. Perhaps if you invite someone to join us and post your poetry, you should advise that person not to post too many poems the first day. The slowest days, Monday and Tuesday are the best. A lot of good poetry is shuffled quickly out of site here and not read until someone brings it to the top. So no rules (point taken JP). Just let your friends know that we want to read their work, just not 14 poems in the space of an hour! Thanks! |

Another forum would give free reign to those who feel compelled to post their entire poetic experience. Nothing would be read, nothing responded to, just oodles of poems slowly gathering dust, for the submitters would be too busy hitting the submit button to spare time for anything so trifling. Yeah, I'm being sarcastic again, but I know too well of slaving over a project, submitting it in the hopes of objective criticism and having it bumped to the deep archives in an afternoon by a plethora of poetry that has not yet been read. I could just respond to myself to put it back at the top, but that notion smacks of spite and poetic masturbation. That's all for now...btw, anyone got change for a penny? Alicat |

Poetic masturbation! LOL I like that. I've seen it! How about if someone replies to EVERY response to their poem? If 5 people respond and the poet replies (thanking them with great humbleness) 5 times, it looks like there were 10 replies! (I'm doing that right now!) |

Damn, I think I've been caught with my zipper down! It's not a terrible thing to poetically please oneself on occasion is it? ------------------ Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn. JP [This message has been edited by JP (edited 08-18-99).] |

It's difficult to make rules without turning into a police state, but it is such a shame that so many good poems get lost because they are posted in really busy times. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have one day a week (or one a fortnight) on which no postings were accepted - we would all have time to do a bit of catching up, and really good poems that were missed would be brought to the top. I know there would be a risk of floods the next day, but if the reason were given together with the refusal, most people would take the hint, and not post more than usual on the other days. |

It seems perfectly obvious to me what the solution is. This is NOT rocket science, fellow poets. Here's how we do it. Whenever I post a poem, it remains at the top until everybody responds to it. That way, no matter how many poems are posted, I'll get lots of responses. Whatta ya think? Pretty ingenious, eh? (eyebrows wigglin') |

How about a forum for each of (talk about unwieldy!).....1000 forums.....then we'd always be on top no matter what! (I really was just kidding!) |
