Can someone please explain to me the meaning of 'deep' in reference to a poem? I've heard this term used several times and I've never quite understood what people mean. I remember in high school, when I was playing rock and roll, and I said something (that I can't remember now) and a young lady responded 'that's too deep for me'. Well, I wrote a song with the title 'too deep for you' but I can't remember what that was about either.

What does it mean?

Complexity?
Profundity?
You like the message of the poem?
The poem is sincere?
You like the poem?
You don't understand the poem?

Help,

Brad

It's very simple, Brad - It's just a matter of how many fathoms you have to traverse to comprehend it......

This is my humble opinion, so please bear with me ...

When I use the word "deep" to describe a piece of writing, I am most often referring to the depths within him/herself that the writer had to delve to write the piece.

Some writing is shallow, and is apparent as such; which is not to say that it is any less worthy for not being woven from the stuff of someone's innermost soul. On the other hand, some writing is very obviously introspective (in the case of the author writing about himself) and/or layered with myriad meanings, which may or may not be obvious to the casual observer. However, it is not simply the existence of these "hidden" meanings, but the lesson that they teach or the statement that they make, that lends "depth" to the writing.

End of babble ...

Brad: If I say "deep" I mean it's profound or poignant..

well can I ditto the 3 above posts without waffling too badly...lol....no really the comment of deep probably has as many meanings as there are readers and "deep" poems...but yes to me it usually means profound, something that makes you think and feel deep within...in other words not a poem about how nice a shade tree is in the summer....and like Noch, not knocking poems as such, we need all types
