Howdy friends and neighbors. This is your lovely kilted moderator speaking without notes upon this fine evening. Though we all know that each and every one of us have different ways of self-expression, it seems far too often that those differences get maligned. And we all have our own views and our own views on other views, but let not this degenerate into primal mud slinging...that is for politics, not poetry.

Yea, verily, and whatnot, we also have styles we prefer...and others we abhor. Personally, I detest cummings' poetry; but, on occasion, I will read one of his works. However, I do not hate cummings. Can you see the difference?

During the course of posting material, there will be some pieces that are loved, hated, or neutrally viewed. And this is OK. If you don't like something you read, either don't respond, or do so in a constructive way. Why do you not like it? How could it be improved? What does this mean? Etc.

One final note. I know there are many, many, many poets here, and more joining each day. Take the time to read and respond..react if you may...to their work. You might just make a friend. And it is OK to respond solely to your friends' writings, but think of all the art you are missing out on...take the time to read something from someone you don't know at all, or one you know marginally. It might be worth the effort.

Good for you AliCat. I was getting a little weary of reading the whining. We are here not only to purport our own writings, but to critique and commend as well. Bravo for sticking your neck out.

I'm in.  *bump*

As for the question, I have replying standards myself.  And I think maybe one of the talks me and PdV and a few other people have been having somehow provoked the resurrection of this thread.

Allan Riverwood is one of the "omni-repliers" in Teen #4, along with Fading Away, Dopey_Dope, and surprisingly many others who just recently joined.
However, I do have reply standards.  I will reply to poetry unless the author does either of the following:

1.  puts "please read" in the title.
2.  posts and never replies.

That's all though, I reply to everything else that I see come into Teen #4.  I just have a few peeves.

I also would like to take part in this discussion.  I think that this was the right time to post this, Alicat.

Everyone has his or her personal poetry preferences.  And everyone has his or her personal poet preferences.  However, I do agree with you that there is a lot of art that is being missed if you pick and choose to whose poetry you want to read and whose poetry you don’t.  I have been a part of many personal discussions with a few others here at PIP as of late about this topic.

I know I have my pet peeves as to who does what in their posts in Passions.  For example, I think all caps in posts are quite bothersome, and posts that have extensive amounts of spelling errors get annoying after a while.  But how do they know that you don't like reading that if you don't tell them?  And telling them in a nice, constructive way is always a plus.  Then, if they choose, they can change that little bit about their posts that might annoy you and they might get a few more replies because of it.  What's the harm in that?  It ends with you being happy, and the person being happy.

However, I think that many people in Passions are not open to this type of criticism, even if it is conducted in a constructive way.  Many take these types of critiques as personal attacks instead of the way they were meant to be taken.  I have seen this especially in Teen.

This produces a problem and causes lots of havoc that doesn’t need to be a part of PIP.  This problem brings about the critique flags.  I understand they are there for a reason, but really, I’m sure everyone here has critiqued someone’s poetry even if they didn’t have a flag up at the time.  It only becomes a problem when the poet who is receiving the replies gets angry, and snaps.

So the solution?  Everyone can be a part of that.  It’s simple: If you want to be critiqued, make a flag.  If you don’t, then maybe let everyone know in the post that you aren’t looking for critiques.  Either way, critiques are should be taken as personal criticism, and not, by all means, as any kind of attack.

With that said, maybe we could all change are ways in PIP.  I’m not saying that I’m not a criminal of these same things, and these things I intend to change.  But everyone could learn something from the poets here.  Take advantage of it!  Don’t miss out because you’re too proud to read other’s work.

I don't think EVERYONE here at Passions takes a critique as a personal attack. There are those who wouldn't like critiques, and there is a critique indicator that lets the reader know if they encourage them or not. Now, there are some who get angry or annoyed at critiques when they are given, but I've seen that happen mostly when they are not flagged for critiques but get them anyway. I can understand that.

Well depends how fast people have replied since my last time coming on. Usually the Initial fly through each day takes about 2 hours   sometimes 3 maximum.
The other fly by's are just me searching for a treasure for the most recent post hehe.

But i'm in passions about ....erm...6 hours a day minimum....unless i'm busy like today......today was hectic, but yea....normally 6hrs.
