Correct me when I'm wrong: A. The Democratic Party is the party for the people--all the people, especially the poor ones, which leads to the Republican's complaint of-- B. Big Government--a system whose regulations deter prosperity and free enterprise through over-regulation. c. <--a little c, because we don't know if the Tea party has movement and strength, or if it's just a repercussion of our current economic duress as we enter into the technological age. As a bonus question, as a resident of the much maligned southeastern Louisiana coast, I would like to know, have we already passed the midpoint of critical mass/shift of power where corporations are more powerful than our government? They sure treat us like that's already so--and, if you believe that is already so, what should we do to rectify that, if anything? |

Hi Serenity.. I`m wishing someone else would come weigh in on this, I suppose they`re all gathering their thoughts for a sufficient reply.. I feel like I can`t really speak to this per se, because all the information I have is what I can glean from the media (how else to get pertinent info; I don`t have an insider in D.C. hah) and I`m so terribly skeptic of the mainstream media that I feel my opinions here would be misguided, probably. I do appreciate the acknowledgement lovie. These are very confusing times for everyone, I do believe. I have so many conflicting emotions so close to the surface, and I am one who has gone well out of her way to avoid dealing with my feelings....and I honestly don't know the answers to these questions either. Serenity, I am not political savy but have read enough over the years to feel that YES corporations do have clout because they have money and politicians can be bought. I am now reading a book about the early years in Iraq and how messed up and departmental the agencies were and how many millions of dollars were used as if it were play money. I knew politicians became more greedy as they grew more powerfl but I do think corporations can buy many of them. And political favors are way out of hand. jo |

This has been on my mind long before the current oil spill crisis and the media attention that BP has received. I always taken for granted that the concept of Free Enterprise was a good thing. But I have watched a certain chemical company with alarm for some time now. This company makes a very effective weed killer, which makes life easier, but the new problem presented was how can this miracle chemical application differentiate between what is a "weed" and what is a desirable crop? Um, it couldn't. So it's application was limited untilllll--a genetically engineered seed proved to be indifferent to the chemical weed-killer. Sounds great, right? But the "catch" is that the company owns all rights to the industrious superseed, with a legal clause that offspring seeds cannot be utilized for future farming, ensuring that a farmer who likes the convenience of these chemically productive farms must buy new stock seed annually--effectively changing traditional farming methods forever. No more heirloom seed allowed, which pretty much guarantees their profits. According to an article I read in Vanity Fair, this corporation has been allowed access to inspect farms for evidence of any of their seed being utilized--and it's very difficult to maintain a certain standard of seed, as nature has ways of its own (wind, birds, etc.) so even the most diligent farmer has been repeatedly inspected, harassed, and bogged down financially in lawsuits as this company which can well afford the pricey big dollar silk suit legal firms, effectively shut down the smaller independent farmers who would decide that they would prefer to not be forced into buying stock seed annually, which is way pricier than re-seeding from the last harvest--which has long been traditional and a point of pride amongst those farmer types. This type of business does not sound like free enterprise to me. It sounds like corporate bullying to me. It stinks of monopoly. Life is getting more and more complicated as we try to balance government regulation and keep pace with our snowballing technology. There's an ironic twist to the company that I speak of--they happen to be the makers of the very plastic casing that protects the original copies of our Constitution and Bill of Rights. I don't think I know a lot, but when I think about stuff like that, sometimes I think I'd rather not know. But as the daughter of a son of a cotton farmer? It just...annoys me, yanno? I realize that lately I'm not exactly going to win awards for Miss Congeniality, but as I might have explained to you privately, I think I just got tired of holding it all in... This is the same with Montanso and the soy beans. Farmers are watched and spied on acorrding to an article I read.They can no longer save and pass on seed,they have to buy new seed from Monsanto each time. I do not like milk, meat or chickens now because of the way they are handled, or eggs. The huge food monopolies have taken over and they are in charge. We have little choice unless we have a rural farmer in our area and then of course the price has to be higher. It goes on and on and it is all greed and our odd government laws that are not really to our benifit. It has gone on too long,so can not be blamed on any administration. The only blame I can see is if nothing is done to change things. Just another old lady wondering where our country has disapeared. jo |

Somehow I don't think our founding fathers envisioned this sorta thing...that was something else I was thinking about when I was trying to avoid all the chat about BP and the oil spill last week... So I decided to check in to my bed (that would be the one over there-->) and watch old movies on the Turner Classic Movie Channel, and what do I find? "Tulsa" If you're not familiar with the movie you should rent it. I cried till I laughed. I don't believe we've learned a damned thing, if you'll pardon my English.  ? |

Karen, I had a cousin in Delaware who had a a farm and buthcer shop.He was known and respected all over the area.I met a man in Florida who knew of him and had nothing but good to say about him. Well he sold scrapple in his butcher shop and somehow a batch of bad spices caused people to become ill. The lawyers kept the lawsuits going for years and he as a one person owner finally lost all he had. It broke his heart and really ruined him.It was the spices that caused the illness but that large company had a lot of well paid lawyers to keep them out of it. Corporations have all the moneyand the clout. jo |

Oh my... I was previously just amusing myself, but this is a very serious question for me--what, if anything, do you think should be done about such unfair business practices? I do understand that more regulation feeds an already large government, and we are all witnesses to the stress that is putting on our interior loyalty, so I would really like to hear if you (or anyone) has some viable, equally ameniable solution? Is it possible to cut corporate power and government fat at the same time? |

I came back to add, I am really just sooooo dumb. I was watching "Tulsa"--not even making any connections to present day, and I said, "Well, that's just stupid business. If one of those rigs blows, without space and containment, the whole field will go..." *sheesh* Not even kiddin'. Hindsight is said to be 20/20, and STILL we ignore it! |

I listened to Coast to Coast last night and they were of course talking about the oil spill. One man, Lynsey Williams, said he has friends in the right places. Two in BP, one an old Shell person and another in high places for whom I forgot the credentials. Williams said in 1970 Russia dug a lot of Super deep wells but on ground,not in the water. They reported that when you get too far down other substances beside oil come up; three gases, one of which was benzine, which will be very destructive to people and new borns. I will not go into it all,but his concensus was that this was an accident but they dug too deep and they never should have had permission to do so. So our government is also to blame for allowing such a deep dig in the Gulf. IF the Russians had knowledge of the problems of such deep digging on land we should have known not to go so far in the Gulf. I went to bed at three thirty and turned it on. To read it I will have to go to CoasttoCoast.com. I know nothing of this Lynsey WIlliams so do not vouch for all he said,but he said a lot.I finally fell to sleep and did not hear all of the broadcoast. love ya, can not give you any ways to help this situation.Supposedly every one who should be in our Government and others are on top of it. YEAH! |

I've been thinking about this off and on since you posted this Karen. I guess the only thing I can contribute is that there are good companies and bad companies, ethical ones and greedy ones. By the same token there are also good government administrations and bad ones, ethical ones and greedy ones. Blanket assumptions can't be made about private industry or governments. They all have to be individually judged by their actions. |
