You know what

I'm sick of these candyfloss
throated girls, these Catherines
and Faryls who blow out their chests,
and burble great bubblegum
Ave Maria's looking like
it's no effort and they're doing it
just for you, and not for the other
five hundred seventy somethings
in the audience.

What happened to the Tina Turner
clones?  Let's have one of these
pitch perfect Misses go wrong:
swap the teasing organza
for leather and zips, a Goth cut
and black gloss, steel through
every loose bit of flesh, and a fist
knotted in her girlfriend's hair.
And on stage she'll square up,
like a bull terrier, to an audience
deliciously cowed by the whisky
and bad angels in her voicebox.

Well, I learned a new word at least...burble. Have gone through my entire misguided life without using that one

This is the type of free verse I enjoy. cleverly written, easy to read and understand, painting good imagery in the mind.

Not sure I understand the point of it unless you are knocking a "one in a million" talented singer because she is a 13 year old, clean-cut schoolgirl instead of a Cindy Lauper type with pink hair, tattoos and piercings. I haven't heard her but, apparently, she must have something special for all of the reviews and advance sales committed. Take two episodes of the Osbournes and call me in the morning

Besides, anyone who gives Simon the finger can't be all bad...

yep. You don't need to look like a freak(saying that with the fact that I personally have 20 tattoos) or someone that lives hard, to sing good....or in her case, sing amazing...I would much rather see a clean non slut be a role model for girls.

She does Michael, and I am getting another one next week trying to catch up to her, which I won't.  I am up to 7 Susan.

There are tons of singers with "grit" out there, and I don't begrudge anyone who works hard and can sign a contract worth that much, she deserved it.

I personally love Josh Stone, Pink, Amy Winehouse, Sugarland, and many more that are not "Barbie clones."  Then again, I actually danced in a cage (after work) at Oil Can Harry's in Vancouver when Ike and Tina played there       Oh man, I really AM old!  Boy I could write a book about those two!

Loved the "Take two Osbournes and call me in the morning!"  Admit it, now that was darn funny!

Mike ty - it was a bit of a fun rant poem with maybe a small grain of truth, or is it cynicism?  Anyway you're biassed.  You're one of the 70 somethings in the audience, yes?

SEA - don't panic. It was sort of tongue in cheek, although as I said above I think there are some worrying trends in the industry. The Cowells and record labels seem mysteriously always to support the good singers who also just happen to be attractive, I wonder how many plain girls there are out there who are as good or better.

no panic...

I get your point, I just get sick of seeing these "edgy" kids...I mean, how can you be edgy and a kid for goodness sake?! LOL

But yes, I agree. The sad part is? If they are plain to start out, they will pressure those poor kids and make them be cookie cutter commercial, marketable...individuality buh bye.

I can understand what you're saying, moonbeam. There is a ton of talent out there that will never have a shot based on their appearance. That's the world we live in...and it is the world. Case in point...the Chinese singer at the Olympic opening whose voice was dubbed in for a prettier girl because they did not consider her pretty enough to let her sing her own song. We live in a shallow universe....

SEA...20 tattoos...Sharon...pole dancer..what an informative thread!!!

Meatloaf.  Mama Cass.  Maybe even Edith Piaf, if you're prejudiced in favor of frequent bathing.

I don't know that the society is so much insistent on beauty, since we have so many different standards for what it actually is (beyond symmetry, of course) as we are twitchy about exposing ourselves to bullies and sadists.  Simon Cowell, at least to my mind, would qualify for being at least very cruel.

Mostly I think folks are pretty much willing to let you be if you make an attempt to look well put together and decently groomed.

I also understand I'm in an very small minority about this.

I lost all respect for Cowell as of last week's American Idol. Actually, I had always supported his "tell it like it is" philosophy but now he is nothing more than a jerk. One of the contestants, the 16 year old, gave  the performance of her life which had the entire place on it's feet and Simon was scribbling crayon on Paula's face, taking away from what was probably the proudest moment in the young girl's life, all for the sake of a cheap laugh. Had I been the girl, or the girl's father, i would have slapped his face. The man has no class at all.

Sharon, that's more than two words

"Simon knew the minute she opened her mouth that he was going to make a fortune from her"

Is that a bad thing?
