As I've previously specified, I have my reservations with House Speaker Pelosi, particularly on how she's ever going to come close to even begin living the promise of having the most honest and open Congress in American history! (rolls eyes) But the non-stop smear machine being ran on her trip to Syria I have to say I find utterly hypocritical, so I thought I'd go over each of these attacks with a fact-check. Boston Globe: April 4, 2007 CBS News: April 4, 2007 And so first, President Bush, Vice President Cheney, presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and a whole slew of right-wing pundits from Fox News to AM radio have been making a big deal and complaining about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad this week, accusing her of everything from rewarding a bad actor in the Middle East to taking the road lined with the victims of Hamas and Hezbollah. Lancaster Online: April 3, 2007 Yet, what most of the press covering this story WON'T tell you is that three Republican congressmen (Rep. Frank Wolf, Virginia Republican, Rep. Robert B. Aderholt, Alabama Republican, and Rep. Joseph R. Pittsalso) met with Syria's president.....the EXACT SAME WEEK! Even more interesting still, as the above article mentions, Gabe Neville, Pitts' chief of staff, said that the conference between Assad and the three Republicans was intended to be "low profile." and was "done in cooperation with the administration." Ssttriikkkeee one! Think Progress: April 4, 2007 Yet, the attacks didn't stop there. Next, pundits including Sean Hannity, the hosts of Fox & Friends", Matt Drudge and a slew of top right-wing bloggers decided to smear Pelosi over her visiting a mosque, wearing a head-scarf, blasting her from everything including yielding to a "misogynistic culture's expectations".  Errrrr...ummmm...despite the fact that many women administration officials, from First Lady Laura Bush visiting the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, have done exactly the same, yet not getting any of the same press? Ssttriikkkeee two! The White House: April 3, 2007 Yet, once again, they couldn't resist taking another jab, this time accusing Pelosi of usurping the President's diplomatic agenda, with Romney, Bolton and others arguing that it has long been established that the president runs foreign policy, although there is little or nothing evident she was speaking on behalf of the president to begin with. The National Security Archive: War In Colombia Yet, guess who led a delegation to Colombia in 1997 when U.S. officials were trying to attach human rights conditions to U.S. security assistance programs, specifically encouraging Colombian military officials to “bypass” President Clinton and “communicate directly with Congress.”? The PREVIOUS HOUSE SPEAKER, DENNIS HASTERT!  * "...a congressional delegation led by Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) which met with Colombian military officials, promising to “remove conditions on assistance” and complaining about “leftist-dominated” U.S. congresses of years past that “used human rights as an excuse to aid the left in other countries.” Hastert said he would to correct this situation and expedite aid to countries allied in the war on drugs and also encouraged Colombian military officials to “bypass the U.S. executive branch and communicate directly with Congress.” * In fact, Hastert even unilaterally attempted to reach deals with Colombian officials: Center For American Progress: June 6, 2006 "House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, at the direction of the Hastert group, would fly to Colombia, meet with the nation’s anti-narcotics police and negotiate the levels and terms of assistance, the scope of the program and the kinds of equipment that would be needed. Rarely were the U.S. diplomatic personnel in our embassy in Bogata consulted about the “U.S.” position in these negotiations, and in a number of instances they were excluded from or not even made aware of the meetings." * SSTTTTTRRRIIIKKEEE THREE! World Public Opinion: December 5, 2006 By the way, I must also add here that an overwhelming majority of Americans agree with the Iraq Study Group's December 6 recommendations that suggested opening negotiations with Iraq’s neighbors and holding an international conference (also suggesting that the U.S set a goal in withdrawing most combat forces from Iraq by early 2008)  In fact, direct talks with Syria and Iran are a bi-partisan interest, with majorities among all political affliation believing it is a good idea to do so.
