HUSSEIN EXECUTED IN THE UNITED STATES . Saddam Hussein was executed in the United States yesterday, following years of appeals and controversy. Since the initial sentencing, lawyers for Hussein have flooded the courts with appeals, ranging from outrage that Hussein was not granted a fair trial to claims that he was not allowed the proper avenues given to all defendants convicted of murder. Teams of high-priced lawyers lined up for the opportunity to handle the appeals. Treatment of Hussein while encarcerated during the trial was called barbaric and inhumane. The ACLU flooded the country with petitions demanding a stay of execution and reminding the courts that they were no more than the murderer they had sentenced to death. Rosi O'Donnell called Bush the actual murderer and labeled Hussein as a "helpless pawn" in the Bush administration's attempt at world domination. The major news agencies, having failed in their demands to have the trial aired on prime-time television, demanded the right to have his execution aired, claiming the public and the world had "the right to see". Commercials were reportedly going for five million per minute. It was to be the "Coca Cola Execution of Saddam Hussein", with Prudential Insurance slow-motion replays. Thousands of reporters stood vigil outside the prison, along with protesters from both sides. After the secret execution in a non-disclosed location, the press screamed FOUL!! so loudly that the echoes reverberated throughout the Himalayas and then went scurrying around, trying to fill hours of "Breaking News" with basically no information at all. PMSNBC has threatened to sue the court system for interfering in their "right to earn a living" by excluding news agencies from participation in Hussein's final moments. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton plan to lead marches in Washington, DC, denouncing the execution and declaring it to be nothing more than another hanging of a non-white, reminiscent of life in the U.S. during the fifties. Giraldo Rivera has been called in to save the networks with his ability to conduct incessant rambling with absolutely no information at all. Hussein's daughter, living in Jordan, has demanded to have the body sent to her for proper burial. The courts, under pressure from the ACLU and religious groups, have agreed that her demands are within her rights and preparations are being made to have the body shipped to Jordan. . HUSSEIN EXECUTED IN IRAQ . The Iraqi government announced three days ago that Saddam Hussein would be executed sometime within the next thirty days. He was executed two days later with no advance notification at an undisclosed site with no reporters present. The location of the body is unknown and the burial site will not be disclosed. The Iraqi government has told Hussein's daughter in Jordan to pound sand. . Personally, I prefer the second (actual) scenario.......and you? |

Mike, I'm with you!!! I really think that as long as a person has done things as atrociously public as Saddam, he should get his day in court, one appeal within say no more than 90 days and then executed by whatever means it takes to get the job done within 30 days of that. I normally don't agree with the death penalty (too much room for error in some cases) but for something this clear cut? Yeah, pull the levers, triggers, whatever and let him meet whatever God he believes in to figure out his damnation. |

As I've stated before, I am opposed to the death penalty, because I believe far beyond the obvious scope that it is just inhumane to an extent, it also just doesn't teach or resolve in the end. By all means, I wish that our prison system could be reformed so that our tax payer dollars wouldn't go into ensuring luxuries for prisoners and simply go to incarcerating the worst criminals, which I absolutely agree with that argument, but I believe solitary confinement without parole is a more effective punishment where the one who commited the heinous crime is forced to live in anguish and grapple with the pity and pay the emotional, psychological price of his/her actions, and hope though you must continue to live the penalty, you can recognize your faults and actions and such. The death penalty I believe just cancels out that process cynically; it's abrupt, and it's a lesson or anguish left unheard, unlearned. * Having said that, Hussein is NOT a man who listeners or hears, and has no shame for the war crimes he's committed, so I also believe there's no use arguing here, as indeed Hussein is a tyrant of the Earth who committed atrocious, monstrous acts on the civilian population, and I am certainly glad Saddam can never again harm another man, woman or child. I guess I'm just mixed on this whole thing entirely; I'm glad everyone can rest assured he will never again shed the blood of the innocent, but also concerned that he died as a martyr, and am left with an uneasy feeling as well that because he died as a martyr, it's only going to encourage other extremist martyrs like himself to continue killing and torturing as he did! Actually, Noah, it's interesting that there have been very few cries of "martyr" sounded. From a handful of hard-core supporters, ok, but as far as the general Arab community and countries, including the editorials of Al_jazeera, the general consensus voiced is that Hussein was really a bad egg who deserved to be removed from power. Yes, there is indeed a group that does not support the death penalty but I've heard none of them claim Hussein has attained martyr status because of his death. |

. The difference between Saddam and a thing that rapes and then buries alive a child in Florida was one of scale. We have heard but a small fraction of the horrors he and those at his behest committed, and, not being or related to the victims, seem incapable of comprehension. He was a monster who took pleasure in the horrors he inflicted. At some point someone had to act. In Mike’s first scenario you could just as easily put those brought to trial at Nuremburg. Perhaps the difference the is that the American public was made well aware, ( the pictures of the skeletal bodies stacked on top of each other were a part of my growing up). Now we can’t seem to deal with idea that there’s any one worst than ourselves against whom all others must be protected. . |
