. “TORONTO — Prime Minister Stephen Harper stunned Parliament on Wednesday by introducing a motion recognizing the French-speaking province of Quebec as a nation within Canada — a moved aimed at pre-empting Quebec's separatist party which intends to do the same. . . The issue resurfaced when Michael Ignatieff, a front-runner for the Liberal Party leadership, said the French language, history and culture mark Quebecers as a separate people who should be recognized as a nation under the Constitution.” . http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,231538,00.html?sPage=fnc.world/americas . My question is: should emigrants and their descendents who as a body refuse to assimilate have the same recognition in France? . |

Should be interesting, as there is a substantial Muslim population in Quebec, so if French Quebec is allowed to be a nation within a nation, it won't be long before Muslims do the same. Or Hispanic or Latinos, and yes they have sizable populations in other provinces in Canada. At basest, it will probably be much the same as American Reservations, where they are nations within a nation, beholden to their own laws and decrees. How else could there be casinos and other gambling institutions in non-gambling (barring lotteries and similar incarnations) states such as Arizona? At worst, I could see Quebec splitting off and forming their own government and military, much like the US based New Black Panthers wants to do with California, and how the US based Christian Neo-Nazis want to do with Canadian border states. |

As long as it keeps them a province, I have no problem with calling them a "nation". |

So would Quebec as an independant nation, be exempt from Canadian taxes? Would goods that enter or leave Quebec be considered import and export? |

. As alluded to, could we one day see a East and West Paris, each as a capital within what was France for two culturally different nations? . |
