http://conways.nationalreview.com/ Ever wonder what the other side is saying. I do: quote: And in National Review no less. And here is just one reaction: quote: Now, can I resist a quip, can I, can I? Must re----sist~ |

Go ahead and quip Brad but try to make it pithy. As a Republican, I can't say I'm all that pleased with the party's direction. But I also find even much less to agree with in the Democrats. As for incompetency, I can only remind of Jimmy Carter: double digit inflation combined with double digit unemployment and topped of by a US embacy taken and the diplomats held hostage 400 days. Of course there was that exceptionally well planned "rescue." Right now, the only politician I can really agree with is my own fresman senator, Tom Coburn. He is one of the guys behind the pork buster brigade. Maybe it will eventually do some good. I have always been a Republican but have supported and voted for numerous Democrats over the years when I thought they had the right stuff to make a difference. What this country needs is partiots instead of partisans. I fear we may never see that era again though. You see the problem here is this forum just as much if not more than in the government. With that attitude, what chance do we have? Pete |

quote: I don't know, Pete. We do have an anchor in the constitution, and I suspect, despite all our difference, there are certain basics we all agree on. Uh, and you did have to beyond 25 years to find a more incompetent president. Quip: I think the comparison is more on target than you might think. |

The level of partisan bickering is only going to get worse -- and it's because 'things' are going to get worse. You see this kind of backbiting and acrimony on a micro scale inside companies that aren't performing well -- and instead of trying to actually fix the company and its products people get caught up in petty politics and fixing the blame. If GM had actually designed cars that people wanted and maintained their market share they wouldn't be complaining aobut health care legacys and pensions and laying off people and closing plants. We entered a new era when Bush 41 uttered the words 'New World Order' -- globalization. We've been living on borrowed money on a personal level -- U.S. savings rates for families are at zero. The housing boom cannot keep inflating -- people won't be able to borrow more against their equity -- so they will lose the ability to buy the cheap shoes, toys, and electronics that we're importing -- the rest of the world will suffer too -- the net result -- lower standard of living for most of the people in the U.S. -- and around the world -- except for the robber baron class. Of course -- we can continue to change the formula for the metrics and call building hamburgers (manufacturing) -- keep pulling people out of the unemployment numbers who have been unemployed too long (which started under Clinton) and say it's all blue skies... but the acrimony tells the story. as long as the oligarchs can pit us at each other's throats with gay marriage, abortion, and national security issues -- they don't have to worry about us finding the pea under the shell. but, this forum, and one's like it -- are the key to maintaining discourse instead of succumbing to sound-bite politics it's not about the GOP or the Democrats -- it's always been about the money -- the money flows to power |
