It's way too quiet in here! so, just to stir up some wind (apologies to those of you in hurricane zones)

Are you concerned the newest Supreme Court nominee, Aliota, if appointed, may send us backwards in time with respect to women's abortion/health rights?

The Rebel is dislocated?

sounds painful.

In fact, it is.

But...okay, I'll bite.

Not even sure if I should start this, 'cause I never know what I can finish these days, but although I concede that the issue of abortion may well be a red flag issue of women's rights, I consider it a red herring issue now.

There is now a "morning after"...

for those who regret holding on through the night. *wince*

I know.

But nobody is ever gonna give me a tiara for tact, huh?

There are several arguments to be made for overturning Roe.

The majority of Americans are pro-choice -- knocking down the Roe decision puts the issue back into the political arena where scads of politicians who claim to be pro-life would be forced to finally put up or shut up.  If the issue were settled politically it would be de-fused as a polarizing agent.

A reversal also brings into question the issue of privacy in the Constitution.  A lack of Judicial precedence could possibly bring about a much-needed amendment to address privacy in all sorts of ways that could never have been anticipated by the framers of the Constitution.

That said, I'm amused that Harriet Miers wasn't afforded the much ballyhooed 'Up and Down Vote!' that Republicans were crying about for the last year, and that now, with Alito -- the mantra of "Ideology is not an issue" from the right wing flies in direct contrast to Tom DeLay's own defense strategy challenging the political ideology of his would-be Judges in Texas on the grounds that if they donated money to John Kerry and Moveon.org that his case couldn't be properly adjudicated.

Or is it just me?

It ain't just you sweetie.

I still maintain that what I discuss with my doctor is between me and my doctor.

So, if you're carrying a highly infectious disease, Karen, I have no right to know?

There can be no such thing as complete privacy in a world where one life affects another. Your rights have to end where mine begin, and I think that's a line any sane person would agree has to be drawn.

We, uh, just don't always agree where the line should be drawn.

Okay. I have the flu. I'll try real hard not to sneeze THROUGH the screen.

Shrugging.

But IF I had medical insurance, and could see a doctor for that, my course of treatment would be a discussion between me and my physician.

My course of treatment would be a decision which would be made, by me, dependant upon the ADVICE of my doctor. (See why me and docs don't generally get along? I figure if I pay them, they work for ME. )

But? *chuckle* You know it doesn't matter to me what we discuss, I ain't skittish.

I'll not only show you my surgical scars, I'll put a tour of it on the internet.

But then, you know that.

Gawd knows, I've announced my monthly cycle enough times right here in the blue pages.

(Perhaps I'll strive for more subtlety and just change my font to red in the interest of discretion. But I digress...)

but then, I tend to do that.

But I really do have the flu, so I have a better than my average excuse for my scattered brain tonight and yep, I'm milkin' it.

Besides that, the roofers have been here all day and are showing up bright and early tomorrow morning. boom boom boom boom today

bang bang bang bang tomorrow.

Besides, the flies are driving me nuts too.

I've been spraying them with aquanet. It makes their wings get gummy so they will stay still long enough to splatter 'em.

The best thing going for me is a new bed, and yep, satin sheets.

They are NUT colored. I kept the package as proof.

g'nite Ron.

Somebody ask Kit if she can make me a smilie with a respirator.

(serenity exits, delirious...)

(serenity enters, forgot my bri-bear...)

and btw? I used to have insurance, and I seem to recall signing some sorta legal form regarding my right to privacy and disclosure and such. So as far as I know, that hasn't changed.

But then, I have yet to be diagnosed with ebola.

And sigh. I'm sure that's not out of the realm of possibility either.

I'm tard. g'nite all.

I'm back.

As luck would have it, this topic came up on that Bill Maher show I watch from time to time.

He said that turning over the Roe decision would simply revert the issue of abortion back over to the states.

Is this so?

(When I don't know, I don't mind asking.)

But he did picture abortion vacation packages as part of a tourism lure for some of the more liberal states in the union.

Made me sneeze in my toddy, he did.

Perhaps some of you more informed Pipsters could enlighten me on if that would indeed be the case...

Well, that may be the case, Karen. It remains to be seen what will happen, and my crystal ball didn't focus on this as much as the environment.
Which of course, I have a GRIN report:
(not grim as per the environment, but grim as per many other things)
but its to be in "the next thread"
I know this doesn't make much sense, but read the next thread when you have a moment. meanwhile, here's a tissue and a bottle of merlot!

Bill Mayer even offered a slogan for such states.

"What happens in Vegas--stays in Vegas." As he nodded sincerely, "REALLY."

and it's okay if I'm smacked for bad taste, but hey? I quoted it, didn't write it.

People find a way.

They did before, they will again.

(But do forgive me, as I don't actually think it is a laughing matter.)

Sometimes people laugh as a nervous reaction.

Heh heh?

But you brought up the issue of infectious diseases--you care to make that connection for me? (for those who don't 'know' me, that ain't sarcasm, I am genuinely confused)

sigh

You're absolutely right, and that's a big part of the problem.

The 21st Amendment didn't repeal the 18th because Prohibition was necessarily a bad idea, but rather because Prohibition didn't work. If people were going to drink regardless of the law -- and clearly they were -- society's role had to change from trying to stop them to trying to make the sale of alcohol less disruptive and dangerous.

Roe versus Wade didn't make abortions possible. It made them safer. And reversing the law certainly won't make abortions impossible, but will only serve to damage or kill those who can't afford a quick trip to somewhere where they're safe.

People will, indeed, find a way. Even if it kills them.

Your body is NOT your own, and it never has been. Society will take your land if it needs it, give away your kids if you abuse them, and quarantine your body any time it present a medical threat to others. There is always a line between your rights and the rights of others. You said, "I still maintain that what I discuss with my doctor is between me and my doctor." which essentially argues there is no line. You presented an absolute, and my point was that there are no absolutes. If you want to know if your neighbor's kid has bubonic plague before letting your own children play with them, then you first have to recognize the existence of that line.

Once recognized, then we can start talking about where it should be drawn.

You make a valid point here, Ron. I want that 'line' to protect me. Sometimes it doesn't. Where my rights end and yours begin will always be a moveable fuzzy line, because each generation seems bent upon resetting the standards, re-adjusting the standards of right/wrong. The 'lines' have often moved, and not always in the directions I'd have chosen. That's why I feel it's as important to control who sits on The Bench as it is who takes on the title Commander-In-Chief. What you said is true, no matter which way the Roe goes, women will find a way to abort. I am deeply concerned that there will be serious consequences if the abortion scene moves backwards into those darkened alleyways of the past. For me, it's a health issue more than a religious issue, but I realize I am often in the 'immoral' minority (as someone called me once) when it comes to The Great  American Way.
