I've been pondering this for a bit, and have concluded, especially since it would appear that it's mostly the academia in the United States that uses BCE and CE, that this is the latest attempt to eliminate any mention of Christ from the educuation system and American society, which I hold in some ways responsible for the degradation of morals, ethics, and values in this country.  In fact, I've seen BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) so often as of late, that I was very surprised to see a History channel show about Daggers, Axes and Swords use BC and AD.  Perhaps it was originally taped prior to the eviction of Christ.

This current movement is just another cog in the wheel towards changing the American society.  First, I guess, would be the Scopes Trial, which replaced Judeo-Christian Creationism with Darwinian Evolution (which later tried very hard to ban Intelligent Design).  Then the removal of school prayer, to the point where Christian religious groups (but not Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Oriental, or Wiccan), have been targetted for lawsuits regarding Separation of Church and State.  And then the renaming of Christmas and the outright bans in many states on Christian Christmas displays (but not Kwanzaa or Hanukkah) in public places, again the Separation of Church and State, to Happy Holidays.  Now this.

It seems incongruous that these groups attack only Christianity.  I guess they don't attack Muslims the same way, saying belief in Allah is a lie, since that might imperil the instigator's life, much like animal rights extremists throwing paint on old ladies wearing furs, and not on bikers wearing leather.

I originally thought of posting this in Philo, but as I went on, it became more of a rant than an invitation to philosophical discourse.  What can I say....I've been stewing about this for some time.

Alicat -- I have to agree with you on this.  Textbooks starting changing in the 70s, I think...but don't quote me on that...just something my older sister pointed out to me once .... history books changing, etc.  Could have been the 80s....like I said, don't quote me but it is worth some research if anyone had the time.

Ali- I have actually been on the same rant for the past 10 or 15 years, and have found the universal, "yeah, who cares" attitude about it. The case in court that finally shot me over the edge is a few years back, when the ACLU went to court to fight to have a Nativity scene removed from the lawn of the borough offices for a small town  near here (small enough, in fact that the area is listed in streets, rather than square miles). They cited the unfair practices of forcing the TWO Jewish families in the area to be exposed to the "singular and monopolizing" existence of one religion. That in and of itself is nota huge deal... until you throw in the fact that the Jewish families did NOT call the ACLU, and that they couldn't understand the fuss. THe council offered them "equal time" and the ACLU said it was unacceptable. The Jewish families stated for the record they wanted no part of this fiasco, and the ACLU went against their wishes and fought anyhow...
The question I have is... What happened to the civil liberties of the non-Jewish people in the town??

Another example is my daughter's school which permitted her to learn all about Hannakah and Kwaanzaa (including the religious symbolism and such) yet was only allowed to know abut Christmas as the time of year when that bearded, fur-covered poster boy for Jenny Craig breaking into people's houses in the middle of the night... INCLUDING the banning of such "unfair" songs as Silent Night and Little Drummer Boy.

Ali, my friend, it seems that CE has redefined discrimination as anything that disallows free thought and liberty, with the fine print reading:

*not applicable if you are non-caucasion, or of any faith other than Chrisitanity.

When all is said
All is done
Still I live
And carry on-
